  • The role of evolving 5G and emerging 6G networks in Industry 4.0 era

The role of evolving 5G and emerging 6G networks in Industry 4.0 era

In this podcast episode we discuss with Manuel Lorenzo, Head of the Technology & Innovation of Ericsson (Spain), the “Innovation Trends in I4.0 enabled by 5G and Beyond Networks”. Manuel has been very active over the past 30 years (since 1994) in the development of wireless networks technology, while currently is leading research and innovation activities associated with the application of wireless networks in industry vertical sectors and the creation of the associated ecosystem to deliver more innovations. On this topic, Manuel recently led the preparation of a White Article under the auspices of the 5G PPP Technology Board, entitled “Innovation Trends in I4.0 enabled by 5G and Beyond Networks”. In the postcast, Manuel discusses with Prof. Ioannis Tomkos (University of Patras, Greece) the key findings of the studies that are reported in this White Article, focusing on the major trends of I4.0 evolution in the near and mid-term future, what makes 5G/6G so relevant for I4.0, concrete cases of I4.0 initiatives embracing 5G technologies, the role of Non-Public 5G Networks, the most impactful 5G networks innovations for I4.0, what can be expected more as we proceed towards 6G and which specific aspects of the foreseen evolution from 5G to 6G are expected to further propel I4.0 innovations.

  • The role of 6G-XCEL SNS project in fostering EU-USA cooperation on AI for 6G

The role of 6G-XCEL SNS project in fostering EU-USA cooperation on AI for 6G

In this podcast, we have the pleasure to discuss with Dr. Dan Kilper who is a Professor of Future Communication Networks at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) and the Director of the CONNECT Centre (since 2021). In the past, among other positions, he was a Member of Technical Staff, at Nokia Bell Labs (USA). In his current role at CONNECT, he is also serving as coordinator of the “6G-XCEL” project that belongs to the group of 27 new research & innovation projects, funded under the SNS JU EC Program, Phase-2 and started running on Jan 1st 2024. It is worth emphasizing that 6G-XCEL is the only project that engages partners from both EU & USA on a collaboration about 6G networks and in particular the use of AI across the end-to-end 6G networks that include the RAN, the optical x-haul and the Core network. In this episode, the discussion between Prof. Kilper and Prof. Ioannis Tomkos (of University of Patras, Greece), focused around the role of AI in future 6G networks, the objectives and targets of 6G-XCEL Project, the importance of such EU-US cooperation on 6G, the partners that comprise the consortium, the ways that this project is planned to engage with other organization and projects and on how the outcomes of the project can have a long-lasting impact.
