SpaceX and XAI, both owned by Elon Musk, have merged to create a vertically integrated innovation engine. The merger aims to deploy a constellation of up to one million orbital data centres, providing the computing power needed to support XAI’s operations. This ambitious plan could potentially give the merged company a powerful position in the AI and space industries.
The number of satellites in orbit is rapidly increasing, with SpaceX contributing significantly to the recent surge. If the number of satellites reaches a million, the night sky would be filled with constant movement, resembling a swarm of bees or a busy airport. This scenario raises concerns about potential collisions and the Kessler Syndrome, where debris from one collision triggers more collisions, potentially rendering an entire orbital region unusable.
The rapid deployment of a million satellites into low Earth orbit poses significant environmental concerns. These include altering the chemical composition of the upper atmosphere, disrupting natural light cycles impacting animal behaviour, and increasing atmospheric heating and drag. Additionally, the accumulation of space debris poses risks to essential satellite systems and the shared human experience of the natural night sky.
