Why It Matters - Law Enforcement

“Roundtables on Race” host the Rev. Kathy Walker welcomes Sheriff Clarence Birkhead of Durham County and former DEA agent Earnest Howard to discuss the current state of law enforcement on both the local and national level. In this episode, recorded in July, we discuss the appropriate role of different law enforcement agencies, the erosion of policing and training standards on the national level, and how the Durham County Sheriff’s Office works with community partners to protects its community.

Why It Matters - The News Media

On this episode of “Roundtables on Race,” host the Rev. Kathy Walker welcomes returning guests Adrian Walker, associate editor and columnist at the Boston Globe, and Tom Rosenstiel, former executive director of the American Press Institute and current journalism professor, to discuss the ever-shifting landscape of news media, including the drastic shifts we’re seeing today. Among the topics discussed are the evolution and impacts of news consumption; the difference between reporting and commentary and why both are needed; the importance of news and community intersectionality; and the surprising opportunities presented by recent investments in old media outlets.

Why It Matters – Education

In this episode, host the Rev. Kathy Walker welcomes back to the podcast Dr. Catherine Meeks and Senator Dwight Bullard, both lifelong educators and education advocates, for an in-depth discussion on education and the foundations on which contemporary challenges rest. Among the topics discussed are access to education and family stories about the lasting influence of access; the disruptions caused by ongoing shifts in public, private and alternative schools; and how what we see in education and every other system is symptomatic of a far deeper problem and the choice it puts before us.

Why It Matters – Voting, Part 1

In this episode of “Roundtables on Race,” we explore the fast-moving changes to elections on the local, state and federal level with Bob Orr, an attorney and former associate justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court, and Jennifer Roberts, who served as the 58th mayor of Charlotte. Together, they have traveled the state on the Trusted Elections Tour, a bipartisan bus tour educating North Carolinians about voting rights. Together with host the Rev. Kathy Walker, they discuss why every election is the most important one; present and future challenges to voting, including the SAVE Act proposed by the U.S. Congress, recent changes to early voting in North Carolina, gerrymandering and federal interference with local elections; and how county boards of election and volunteers keep our elections free and fair.

Why It Matters – Constitutionality & the Federal Government

“Roundtables on Race” is back with a look at contemporary issues and why they matter - not just to people and communities of color, but to everyone. In this season premiere, Professor Irving Joyner, professor of law at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Law and legal commentator for local, state and national media, returns to the podcast to discuss constitutionality and the federal government. He and host the Rev. Kathy Walker discuss the origins of the Constitution as a framework for how we live as a nation; how the amendments to the Constitution were demanded by citizens as a means to protect all citizens and prevent abuses of power by the federal government; the implications and dangers of allowing the protections afforded by those amendments to erode, both in the short and long term; and a reminder that ours is a government for the people and by the people.
