Rick is arrested by the Trans-Dimensional Council of Ricks — a secret multiverse government of alternate Ricks — and wrongfully convicted of murdering twenty-seven counterparts based on planted portal gun evidence. Tracing the hack leads Rick and Morty to a compound where hundreds of captive Mortys are held in a pain-based cloaking matrix, revealing that every Rick keeps a Morty because Morty's brainwaves cancel out Rick's detectable genius signature. Morty refuses to help, then leads a Morty uprising, frees Rick, and the two expose the real killer: Evil Rick, who was being remotely controlled — by a Morty in the crowd, who destroys the transmitter and vanishes. Back at the house, the lowest-status Rick in the multiverse spends the episode being genuinely kind to Jerry, which every other Rick treats as confirmation of his low status.
