The scribe’s question regarding the prōtos—the first or most important commandment—uncovers a man who is biblically literate and intellectually convinced, yet stands in a precarious position. By quoting the Shema, Jesus reminds us that God’s covenant claim upon His people is total. He demands a love that is undivided and all-encompassing, involving every faculty of the human person: heart, soul, mind, and strength.
