Season Two Trailer: Queer Homes
Notas del episodio
This season, we'll be looking into "homes" as a third place. now, we know that third places are typically spaces that exist outside your home, but for Queer folks, public spaces haven’t always been an option for as a safe place to gather. While Queer bars and other public spaces have served as places where folks can convene, private homes were refuges before those places ever existed and for those most vulnerable in the community where public spaces could and can still be threatening. Further, Queer folks have a historically tricky relationship with the concept of a home. Many Queer people were kicked out of their home at a young age, not welcomed back as an adult, or remain in the closet when they return out of safety.
While much has changed over the decades, the struggle with finding safe public spaces and having a place to return home to has remained pervasive amongst the community. It was for these reasons that we realized it was essential we look into how Queer folks have redefined the purpose of homes, not just out of necessity but for joy. Queer homes have and continue to be at the heart of fostering found family and community in the District.
This season, join us to learn more about how Queer folks used homes or created “houses” to carve out spaces of joy, advocacy, community care, and more. With episodes diving into spaces like 70s activist communes, ballroom and drag houses, house parties, and more.
