God’s Judgment Will Come

God’s judgment will come There is a war coming: God versus pride. The Book of Joel comes full circle by the end: from the judgment prophesied through locusts, to the judgment fulfilled in enemies, to restoration at repentance, and finally to the ultimate judgment of God against those who never chose to believe Him. God is going to enact judgment on the very wicked nations and evil people that He allowed, for a time, to conquer His people. However, they never acknowledged Him, and they will soon realize they're fighting a losing battle. But they are warned to prepare (v. 9). They're told to take their tools for agricul-ture and to beat them into weapons of war (v. 10). But it won't work, because "the sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will diminish their brightness. The Lord also will roar from Zion, and utter His voice from ersaw t different armies assembling for battle (Mark 8:38; Rev. 19:14). STUDY THE BOOK Joel 3:1-21 Jerusalem" (vv. 15, 16). No one and no thing can stand against the Lord. Every enemy of God will fall. "But Judah shall abide forever, and Jerusalem from gen-eration to generation.... For the Lord dwells in Zion" (vv. 20, 21). He will not forget His promises to His people. He will prove Himself to be the God of Israel of the Old Testament and the ultimate conqueror. MORE INSIGHT Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3 use language similar to Joel 3:10, but their prophecies are reversed; the weapons are turned back into farming equipment. Why? The battle is over! No need for any more war. Once God has demolished His enemies, war is over forever. previous: Joel 2:18-32

Do not Fret Because of Evil doers

Do Not Fret Because of Evildoers Psalm 37 Why do the evil prosper in this life? Good question! People throughout history have rightly struggled with the fact that life is not fair. Psalm 37 reveals that God is aware of this dilemma and He will deal justly with evil-doers. For this reason, we are encouraged not to "fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity" (v. 1). Easier said than done. Several truths will help this process. Psalm 37 explains that God will ultimately sort through everything each of us does in this life. Even though the evildoer flourishes in his short days, God promises justice that stretches beyond our time on earth. God challenged the righteous to endure because the wicked (and the righteous) will have their day of reckoning. Psalm 37 emphasizes the fate of evildoers many times over: spective, the flourishing of the wicked Is short (Ecc.3:16-17). • "For they shall soon be cut down" (v. 2). • "The Lord laughs at him, for He sees that his day is coming" (v. 13). • "Enemies of the Lord, like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish" (v. 20). • "I have seen the wicked in great pow-er.... Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more" (vv. 35, 36). Evildoers face a terrifying destiny unless they find God and change their ways. Sadly, even their lives on this earth are not as happy as they appear. The lesson for those who seek righteousness is never to give up on doing good in the name of God. Galatians 6:9 says, "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." For those who live righteously, God has an amazing promise: "Wait on the LorD, and keep His way, and He shall exalt you to inherit the land" (Ps. 37:34). previous: Genesis 3 next: Matthew 25:32-46

A Glimpse Of Eternity

A glimpse of eternity Certain situations in our lives give just a little glimpse of eternity: birth, death, the changing of seasons, a move, saying good-bye, saying hello. God has put eternity in our hearts (Eccl. 3:11). Even though we can't quite grasp or understand it, we do have glimpses of this truth. Psalm 61 is one of those glimpses. David wrote this psalm with a heavy heart and in light of eternity. He cried to God "from the end of the earth" (Ps. 61:2). He wanted to abide in God's presence forever (v. 4). David knew his rule would span. "many genera-tions" and would "abide before God forever" (W. 6, 7). We're not sure how much David understood of eternity, though we do know that God had promised him a descendant who would rule forever (2 Sam. 12-16). But, oh, how glorious that God gave him a glimpse. wavid as one of those in charge of the music associated with worship (1 Chr. 16:41-42). STUDY THE WORD Psalm 61:1-8 David identified God as eternal. David appreciated the generations preceding him: "The heritage of those who fear Your name" (Ps. 61:5). Without fully understanding how or having all the details, David articulated that God is eternal and we are meant to be part of God's forever. MORE INSIGHT David cried to God "from the end of the earth" (v. 2), signifying how far he felt from God. Calling to God demonstrates that no matter how we feel, He is not far and He can be found (Deut. 4:7; 30:11-14). previous: Psalm 54:1-7 next: Psalm 62:1-12

I shall be moved towards evil

I shall not be moved toward evil "I shall not be moved," said David in Psalm: 62:6. (See also verse 2.) Easier to say than to do. But oh, the security that comes in being profoundly committed to goodness and to doing the right thing for the right reason, no matter what. Evil had surrounded David, and had in-credibly frustrated him: "How long will you attack a man?" V3 They only consult to cast him down from his high position" (v. 4). "They delight in lies" (v. 4) "They bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly" (v. 4). How did David manage it? David said God "is my defense; STUDY THE Word Psalm 62:1-12 I shall not be greatly moved" (v. 2). When he repeated the statement in verse 6, he used the exact phrase, except the word greatly is gone: " shall not be moved." We find stability when we lean on God. MORE INSIGHT Read verse 11. It is a convention of Hebrew Wisdom Literature to use a number and then raise it by one. This device serves to emphasize the certainty of the statement being made. previous: Psalm 61:1-8

Clothed In Grace

Clothed In Grace You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds. EPHESIANS 4:22-23 NIV Fashion comes and goes with every new season. If you don't follow it closely, you could be wearing last year's wardrobe before you realize that you are totally out of date! You may not care much about fashion, but living in the past can indicate a lack of acceptance of the present. Such is the illustration with our salvation. When we accepted Christ as our Savior, we accepted a new life— one that is free from the power of sin, and one that began our spiritual, eternal life. If you feel like you have been caught wearing sin like an ugly, old garment, take it off! Instead, clothe yourself with an attitude of forgiveness and the freedom that was given to you through Jesus. Jesus, forgive me for going back to some of my old sinful habits. Thank you that you have given me a new life that allows me to have freedom from my sinful nature. Give me an attitude that willingly throws off my old life, so l can live by your grace.

Held in His Hands

Held in His Hand You, God, see the trouble of the aricted; you consider their grief and take it in and. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. PSALM 10:14 NIV The problems of life are seen all around us, sometimes on a daily basis. We see troubled families, poverty, and sickness. Maybe you are experiencing some of these afflictions. It is comforting to know that God sees our troubles. He is not a God that stands at a distance. He takes our grief in his hand. You may feel helpless, but God is the helper. When the victims of loneliness, abuse, hunger, and poverty seek out God, he will meet them. God carefully watches over the hurting and he offers his hand. Jesus knew what it was like to suffer. He experienced trouble and grief, so we know he understands. Will you trust him to intervene when you are feeling troubled? Will you commit yourself to him, so that he can help you? He cares for humanity, and he cares for you. Heavenly Father, I bring my troubled heart before you today. I ask you to consider my situation. I give it over to you, knowing that you understand and that you care for me. Help me trust you as a good Father who is always there to help me in my time of need.

A prayer About hurting others

A prayer about HURTING OTHERS When I have hurt someone LORD’ I confess that I have hurt otherssometimes accidentally and sometimes intentionally. I have acted without regard for those around me, trying to get my own way. I have used my words to retaliate when others have hurt me first. I have acted in cold and hateful ways toward others, often just because my pride was injured. And I have neglected to offer compassion or help, even when I could see the needs before me. Forgive me, Lord. I am ashamed of my own pettiness and lack of compassion. You are full of unconditional love, and that can never be compatible with intentionally hurting others. I want to be like you. Please wash me clean and fill me with your love for those around me so that I may treat them the way I should. All of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tender-hearted, and keep a humble attitude. Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.

No Longer Captive

No Longer Captive You did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." ROMANS 8:15 NKJV When a slave is released from captivity it is often hard for them to know what to do with their freedom. In fact, many slaves, in Biblical times, would choose to remain servants (bondservants) to their masters, not knowing how to belong elsewhere. We probably don't relate to slavery the way the Israelites did, but we can understand feeling powerless over sin, emotions, or even in relationships. When Jesus defeated death on the cross, he introduced a way for us to be free from our former lives of captivity to sin and death. We no longer have to fear that old life; we have a new life that is living by the Spirit. We are children of God. When we truly understand our freedom, we can begin to let go of the areas of our lives that hold us back. Abba Father, thank you for freeing me from the power of sin and darkness. Thank you that I now belong to your family and I can live protected in your love. Help me to recognize the areas in my life that keep me from living in this freedom, and give me the strength to let them go.

A Prayer About The Holy Spirit

A prayer about the HOLY SPIRIT When I ponder how the Holy Spirit helps me HEAVENLY FATHER, You have given me the precious gift of the Holy Spirit-your very presence within me! Your Spirit helps me to understand your deep truths and to discover the wonders of your character. The Holy Spirit also convicts me of my sin, pointing out the truth of what I am doing compared to what I should be doing. By myself I'm weak, but I have you in me, showing me right from wrong, good from bad, and your way from the way of the world. I'm amazed that you care enough to give me one-on-one instruction and counsel on how to live a life that pleases you. Thank you, Lord, for this wonderful gift. May my heart always be responsive to the Spirits teaching and leading so that this gift may never go to waste. The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentle-ness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's leading in every part of our lives. GALATIANS 5:22-25 HOLY SPIRIT
