Sunday

(The Lord’s Day)

Sunday, the first day of the week, the first day of Creation (Gen. 1:1-5), the day that the Lord Jesus rose literally and bodily from among the dead (Jn. 20:1).

On this Lord’s Day, you purpose to gather with other Christ followers for fellowship, mutual edification, and corporate worship. You could live stream the service, but you place value on being in the same physical space with God’s people.

You may be the pastor, or a staff person, or a Sunday school teacher, or someone who just needs to hear desperately from God. You got up early this morning. You spent some time in prayer and Bible reading, making sure that you are prayed up because you know from experience that relational tensions can erupt at a church service.

Some Christians are off-putting, some are rude, some have awkward mannerisms and ways, some have bad breath or forgot to put on deodorant this morning, and our irritability emerges unbidden from our cold hearts.

You know about the unbidden response of our sinful nature because you have grown in the Lord. You know from experience that your soul must be prayed up and warmed up before you gather with God’s people.

This is why one of the requests we make to the Lord in our Sunday morning personal devotions is “Lord, please enable me to be on this day an agent of biblical love to all that You bring into my path this morning.”

May the Lord cause you to increase and overflow in love for one another (1 Thess. 3:12a, NASB)

Reflection:

  1. In your devotions this morning, did you ask the Lord to help you be a love blessing to others in your local church fellowship? If not, why not?
  2. How did things go in the church service this morning? Did you show love to someone, or receive agape love? What did it look like?
