The man who built the most recognizable modern mythology was so embarrassed by comic books that he used a throwaway pen name, saving his real one for the great American novel he never wrote. This episode follows Stanley Martin Lieber from a Depression-era Bronx apartment where he shared the only bedroom with his brother, through his 1939 start at Timely Comics fetching sandwiches and erasing pencil marks for Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, to a text filler page in Captain America Comics signed Stan Lee.

We cover his sudden promotion to editor at 18, his Army classification as a playwright alongside Frank Capra and Dr. Seuss, and the weekend he unscrewed a military mailbox to retrieve a script. Then we trace the late-1950s burnout, his wife Joan's advice to write one comic his own way, and the 1961 Fantastic Four that injected human flaws into superheroes. We examine the Marvel Method and the authorship disputes it created with Kirby and Steve Ditko, the fan-facing credits and Stan's Soapbox, the 1971 Spider-Man drug storyline that defied the Comics Code Authority, the later business turmoil and lawsuits, and the film cameos that made him a beloved public figure until his death in 2018 at 95.
