A flimsy, blurry stack of tissue-paper carbon copies valued more than any state-published book, and forbidden jazz pressed into discarded medical X-rays with someone's ribs visible at the center. This episode uses declassified KGB reports, archives and sociological analyses to unpack samizdat, the Soviet self-publishing underground that began as a poet's pun in the 1940s and grew into a deadly serious network. We look at the mechanics: locked copier rooms, up to eight sheets of onion skin pounded through a typewriter until fingers bled, whisper networks built on absolute trust, and the KGB registry of typewriter fingerprints that could trace a document to the exact machine.
