The entire machinery of spaceflight is built to push humans away from Earth, yet the most profound discovery many astronauts report happens the moment they turn around and look back. This episode examines the overview effect, the term coined by Frank White in the 1980s for the cognitive shift triggered by seeing the planet suspended in a black vacuum. Drawing on a 2016 study by Yaden and colleagues, we explain the psychology of awe and self-transcendence, how the brain is forced from assimilation into accommodation, and the difference between the perceptual vastness of the Grand Canyon and the conceptual vastness of seeing all of human history inside a paper-thin atmosphere.
