In the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, it says, ‘We seldom allow an alcoholic to live in our homes for long at a time. It’s not good for him and sometimes creates serious complications in the family.’ The most rewarding experiences of my life are lifting somebody up out of deplorable conditions and watching them sail. Though an alcoholic does not respond, there’s no reason why you should neglect their family. You should continue to be friendly to them and offer your way of life. I must be in a way of life to offer it, but I can let them know that the healing power is available and is in pursuit of their loved one. They must get in sync with the spirit for this to work out well. Atmospherics matter. In the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, it says, ‘You will soon have your friend admitting he has many if not all the traits of an alcoholic.’ If I’m properly armed with the facts about myself, I can match your experiences if you want to match them. If you don’t, if you’re just finding the differences, then we just aren’t ready, or I’m not a competent enough messenger. I can admit my incompetence for the sake of your life, but I won’t be so afraid of what you’ll think of me because I delivered the truth that I’ll let you die in your addiction without ever hearing it. In the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, it says, ‘Helping others is the foundation stone of your recovery.’ Who wants a recovery foundation that is filled with stone? All of us, right? That’s how important these people are to us. A kindly act once in a while isn’t enough. I always tell my new ones, if it’s so newsworthy that you need to post your acts of kindness on Facebook, you’re not doing it enough. Post whatever you want, but you ain’t doing enough of it if you think you get a medal for it. And I’m only talking to the alcoholics and the addicts. Position of Neutrality: The Demands of Helping Others – Step 12

In the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, it says, ‘It may mean the loss of many nights’ sleep, great interference with your pleasures, interruptions to your business. It may mean sharing your money and your home, counseling frantic wives and relatives, innumerable trips to police courts, sanitariums, hospitals, jails, and asylums. Your telephone may jangle at any time of the day or night. Your wife may sometimes say she’s neglected. A drunk may smash the furniture in your home or burn a mattress. You may have to fight with him if he’s violent. Sometimes you’ll have to call a doctor and administer sedatives under his direction. Another time you may have to send for the police or an ambulance. Occasionally you’ll have to meet such conditions.’ Guys, that’s the job description. And in Step 3, they said we had a new employer. In the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, on page 98, it says, ‘It’s not the matter of giving that’s in question, but when and how to give.’ Last week, we discussed the importance of growing in understanding and effectiveness. I promised we’d talk about what we’re growing in effectiveness at this week. We need to be in conscious relation because we don’t want our giving to be a detriment to someone’s healing, but we also don’t want to be unkind when kindness is needed. For those of you familiar with biblical teachings, we give to everyone who asks of us, not necessarily what they ask. What are the conditions of body and mind? Having a mental obsession that’s beyond my control—I just can’t get out of the loop. And then, when I finally do ingest it, I have a physical craving. So what should sedate me energizes me, and I need more. How many of you are opiate addicts? Had some clean time and then just went off the rails, OD’d first right out the rip because the craving doesn’t know I ain’t tuned up. They used to try and give me drugs, saying you won’t experience craving. I said you’ll kill me. I ain’t going to stop just because I ain’t feeling it. I’m going to go until I do feel it.
