Position of Neutrality: Embracing Identity and Intentions in Steps 5, 6, & 7 AA
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, diving into the essential practice of owning our identity and behaviors in Steps 5, 6, & 7. Reflecting on the gap between how we behave and who we truly are, Joe encourages a deeper self-awareness and conscious decision-making in our recovery journey. “I have got to do a better job of owning who I am and owning how I behave because how I behave isn’t who I am. I think it is, but it isn’t. How I behave is how you think I am. But it doesn’t tell you my intention at all many times. Does that make sense? So what I need to do is walk in identity more of the time so I can encourage you to walk in identity more of the time and hence the idea for a disciplined thought life and this manner of living we’re prepping for, yes? It should all be making sense. If it’s making sense, then we’re on the right track. You’re not going to be able to move into a conscious relationship without making a conscious decision. You’ve got to examine it with your senses. It’s not a matter of saying yes, I agree or yes, I understand. If you do, you do.” Joe’s discussion sheds light on the importance of walking in our true identity and intentions, emphasizing the need for a disciplined thought life and conscious decision-making in recovery. Position of Neutrality: The Value of Honest Testimony in Steps 5, 6, & 7 AA
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, discussing the importance of honest testimony and following professional advice in Steps 5, 6, & 7. Joe reflects on the common experience of seeking psychiatric help on the path to recovery and the challenges of being truthful and following guidance. “How many of you saw psychiatric help on the way to recovery? I should see a lot more hands. Yeah, a lot of times you were behind glass. I understand. We’ve spent thousands of dollars for examinations. How many of you have spent a little maybe it wasn’t your money but somebody’s money? So before I go any further did you tell them the whole truth? No. Did you follow their advice? No. We know but few instances where we’ve given these doctors a fair break. We’ve seldom told them the whole truth nor have we followed their advice. And I call that to your attention because we miss the value of testimony.” Joe emphasizes the importance of honest communication with medical professionals and the value of testimony in the recovery process. Position of Neutrality: Embracing the Journey of Continuous Recovery in Step 5,6,&7 AA
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, discussing the importance of continuous recovery and the reality of recurring challenges in Steps 5, 6, & 7. Joe reflects on the feeling of relief that comes from unburdening oneself, but also the necessity of maintaining a committed recovery journey. “The feeling that the drink problem had disappeared will often come strongly. How many of you had that experience? I unburdened myself. How many of you found that although it disappeared, it reappeared? So it’s a promise and a warning. I got to stay in the manner of living. This wasn’t about unburdening me. It was about the salvation of the world. Does that make sense? I’m going to do this for you because you’re ideally suited to carry the message I want you to carry, but I want you to carry it.” Joe emphasizes the continuous nature of recovery and the importance of staying dedicated to the process to truly achieve lasting transformation. Position of Neutrality: Embracing Quiet Reflection in Step 5,6,&7 AA
oin Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, exploring the importance of quiet reflection in the recovery process. Joe discusses the challenge of finding inner peace and the significance of taking time for introspection and gratitude. “Returning home, we find a place where we can be quiet for an hour. How many of you would have to admit that being quiet for any length of time, particularly an hour, was complex? Because they’re not talking about quiet here. They’re talking about quiet here, carefully reviewing what we’ve done. We’ve thanked God from the bottom of our heart. Oh, that’s good. That was really good. Nice catch. That we know him. We want to do it again. We thank God. I want to call to your attention for people that have a lack of belief—you know, the atheists, the agnostic, or people just really don’t categorize themselves or whatever, or even believers who think themselves condemned for whatever reason.” Joe emphasizes the importance of embracing quiet time for self-reflection, gratitude, and spiritual connection, regardless of one’s beliefs or background. Position of Neutrality: Discovering the Main Purpose of the Big Book in Step 5,6,&7 AA
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, focusing on the foreword to the first edition and its emphasis on showing others precisely how we have recovered. Joe shares how to find personal experiences within the text and encourages viewers to do the same, promising a shared spiritual experience. “So in the foreword to the first edition, it says to show others precisely how we’ve recovered is the main purpose of the book. So what we do here is exactly that—show others. I’ll show you how I find my experience in the book, and I’ll encourage you to have your experience with the book. And if we both do our job, we’ll share a spiritual experience in this room tonight. How many have been here before and can witness for folks that happens? Very good. So those of you joining us online, you can’t see them, but they’re raising their hands.” Joe’s discussion emphasizes the importance of engaging with the Big Book and sharing personal experiences to foster a deeper understanding and connection. Position of Neutrality: Embracing Step 6 & 7 AA Through Honest Prayer
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, exploring the spiritual depth and transformative power of Steps 6 and 7 AA. Joe emphasizes the importance of asking for the power to change and growing in conscious relation with a higher power throughout the day. “Because you had no power to behave any other way. You want power to behave another way? You’re going to have to ask and grow in conscious relation all day, every day, as I go along because that’s when the attacks come. Any of you notice that? So it says, when ready, we say something like this: ‘My creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength as I go out from here to do your bidding.’” Joe’s discussion sheds light on the crucial practice of seeking strength and guidance through honest prayer, helping individuals on their journey to recovery. Position of Neutrality: Embracing Honest Prayer in Steps 5, 6 & 7 AA
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, diving into the profound experience of honest prayer and the spiritual journey of Steps 5, 6, and 7 AA. Joe reflects on the significance of acknowledging our true selves before God and the importance of building a solid foundation for recovery. “That’s the first honest prayer I ever said because I knew now that God knew me even when I didn’t know me. And he met me right where I was. I didn’t have to prep. You know what my prep was? I got dead. All right, so taking this book down from our shelf, we turn to the page which contains the 12 steps. Carefully reading the first 5 proposals, we ask if we’ve omitted anything, for we’re building an arch through which we shall walk a free man at last. Is our work solid so far? Are the stones properly in place? Have we skimped on the cement put into the foundation?” Joe’s discussion emphasizes the importance of honesty, preparation, and the thoroughness required to build a lasting foundation for recovery. Position of Neutrality: Choosing the Right Confidant in Steps 5, 6 & 7 AA
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, diving into the importance of choosing the right person to confide in during Steps 5, 6, and 7 AA. Joe explores the struggle many face when deciding who to trust with their intimate and confidential admissions and emphasizes the significance of spiritual awareness in these moments. “So rightly and naturally, we think well before we choose the person or persons with whom to take this intimate and confidential step. How many of you struggled with who to confide in? A lot of us do from one time to another. How many of you, when you finally met who to confide in, were blurting it out before you even had a conscious thought? Yeah, a lot of times that’s one of the first spiritual awarenesses—you just all of a sudden are telling something you didn’t expect to hear coming out of you. Those of us belonging to a religious denomination which requires confession must and, of course, will want to go to the properly appointed authority whose duty it is to receive it. So they’re not trying to get in the way of your religious practice. If you have a religious practice that requires confession, by all means, go to the confessional. However, there’s a caution.” Joe’s discussion sheds light on the careful consideration needed in selecting a confidant and the spiritual insights that often accompany this step. Position of Neutrality: Step 1 AA - The Power of Testimony in Recovery
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, diving into the raw and emotional experiences outlined in Bill’s story. Reflecting on the struggles faced by those battling addiction, Joe emphasizes the value of peer testimony over medical opinions. Joe shares, “Sometimes I dally and I like to spend time in Bill’s story and stay away from the doctor’s opinion every once in a while. So we can focus on an experience. If that’s alright with you. How many of you had doctors give you an opinion that you may have been a little persuasive on how you got that opinion and maybe shaded the truth a little bit? How many of you followed their advice to the letter? Most of us have not. So sometimes testimony from peers is more persuasive. Not telling you what you should do but here’s what I did. This is what I experienced as a result.” For more content, please like, comment, and share. Position of Neutrality: Embracing Readiness in Steps 5, 6 & 7 AA
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, diving into the crucial moments of readiness and personal accountability in Steps 5, 6, and 7 AA. Joe emphasizes the importance of recognizing when we are truly ready to move forward in our recovery journey and how to prepare ourselves through prayer and introspection. “And what he said to me is, how do you feel? And I said, I don’t feel safe. And he said, if you don’t feel safe, you’re not safe. What are you ready to do next? He did me a favor. So just so you know, sometimes we just got to get checked, right? All right, so if that is so, this step may be postponed only, however, if we hold ourselves in complete readiness to go through it at the first opportunity. So now it’s back to your personal accountability. Okay, I’m not ready to do this here in this situation, but I am ready when the situation presents itself. And so now I’m ready through prayer to prep for how I’m going to recognize that moment. Yes, okay. So we say this because we’re very anxious that we talk to the right person. Notice I’m not making any of this up. I’m trying to help unpack it for you.” Joe’s discussion sheds light on the process of preparing for crucial steps in recovery, emphasizing the importance of readiness and prayerful preparation.
