Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, diving into the raw experiences of those battling addiction. Joe highlights the persistent illusion of control and the harsh realities of mental illness associated with addiction.
In this session, Joe discusses the misconception of control within addiction. “Nevertheless I still thought I could control the situation. Now we chuckle about that but they’re trying to. A lot of people get here and think that addiction or alcoholism is a condition of choice. And they teach it. But that is only true if you do not believe in mental illness.” Joe explains how addiction manifests as a mental illness, describing Bill’s experience of losing everything to alcohol, waking up sick every morning, and the constant hustle to get more.
