Dr. Doug Groothuis - An Apologetic for Unleashing Women in Ministry

In this episode you will be enlightened and enriched by listening to Douglas Groothuis, Ph.D., Distinguished University Research Professor of Apologetics and Christian Worldview at Cornerstone University and Seminary. Doug is the author of twenty books, including "Beyond the Wager: The Christian Brilliance of Blaise Pascal" (InterVarsity, April 2024), "World Religions in Seven Sentences," "Fire in the Streets"--about Critical Race Theory or Wokeness (Salem, 2022), and "Christian Apologetics," 2nd ed. to name a few. Dr. Groothuis is no stranger to tackling hard conversations, exegeting challenging texts, and conversing with others - be they secular or other Christians who may not share his biblical worldview. Today Dr. Groothuis shares his story around the topic of biblical equality and mutuality. "How God Sees Women" - A conversation about Williams' Insightful Book

In this episode, some of the CBE Denver Team will be discussing Terran Williams’s book "How God Sees Women: The End of Patriarchy." In this book the author offers a robust overview of mutuality. Beginning with the beliefs in and around the early Church, he gives some context for the current theological landscape and then talks about women in the Old and New Testaments, the early church, and modernity. Listen in as Logan, JoAnna and JulieAnne discuss their unique interactions with the book and share personal epiphanies.

Embracing Mutuality; Scripture Changed Our Minds

In his episode, we are joined by Dan Elliott of South Fellowship Church here in Denver. Dan has served as one of the pastors at South for over 20 years in a wide range of roles and responsibilities, and currently oversees Community Care. He was also part of the elder board during South’s intentional season of discernment around a biblical response to women in ministry. Today, we’ll hear about that process: what prompted it, how the leadership and congregation engaged Scripture and one another, and how that journey has shaped South Fellowship as they move forward in an egalitarian vision for ministry. We’re grateful for Dan’s long faithfulness to his church family and look forward to learning from his experience and insight. Listen in while Dan shares his discernment journey from a place of hierarchical complementarian to non-hierarchical complementarianism – which is also known as egalitarianism, or better yet mutuality. A Hermeneutic of Imagination; Exploring Imagination in Understanding God's Inerrant Word

In this episode, we will be engaging in a conversation about hermeneutics and mutuality, in Dr Knut Heim’s newly released book, A Hermeneutic of Imagination: Unlocking Scripture’s Full Potential. Joining us is Rev. Dr. Knut Heim. Dr. Heim has been a Professor in Old Testament at Denver Seminary since 2016. He is an ordained minister in the Methodist Church of the United Kingdom and has also worked as a missionary with Operation Mobilization and an educator in the UK. His vision is to help students discover the Old Testament as a resource for ministry and an inspiration for life. He completed his PhD at the University of Liverpool on editorial clusters in the book of Proverbs. He has published multiple books and numerous articles and essays on the wisdom literature in the Hebrew Bible and has worked on commentaries on Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.

Discovering Your Call; Learning to Use Your Voice

In this episode, we’ll be talking with Mary Hanson, author of The New Perspective on Mary and Martha and Bold Girls Speak: Girls of the Bible Come Alive Today. In this discussion, Mary shares her fascinating journey as a woman who was not “given a voice” in the hierarchal and patriarchal churches in which she was raised, but through persistence and study unearthed the biblical truth of Mutuality in God’s inerrant Word. Once she discovered how God view women and knew that God’s intent from Genesis to Revelation was for males and females to work together toward Kingdom Building, she decided to use her gifts of teaching and writing to inspire others to embrace this truth, especially young girls. Her passion is to have all believers, male and female, young and old, realize their spiritual gifts and listen to the Spirit (not to the world) so that together in Mutuality we can practice the upside-down Jesus way of Kingdom building.

The Truth of Mutuality: Ways to Engage in Dignified Dialogue

In this episode, we will be engaging in a conversation about mutuality, specifically, the need to engage in dignified dialogue about this contentious issue. Joining us is Reverend Lauren Parliament. Lauren is the Minister to Future Leaders and Discipleship for the American Baptist Churches of the Rocky Mountains, where she works with youth, youth leaders, and others to develop the potential of future leaders to help shape the world. Lauren is a graduate of Denver Seminary with a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Counseling and Care. She also has a BA in Sociology and a BA in Inter-Disciplinary Studies in Theology and Communications from the University of Sioux Falls. Lauren has been heavily involved with CBE and is passionate about mutuality between men and women. Her desire is for the Church to be a place of encouragement, love, and comfort.

Mutuality in Marriage: Doing Life and Ministry Together

In this episode, we will be engaging in a conversation about mutuality in marriage and ministry. Joining us is Kyle Sutton. Kyle has a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Colorado Christian University and a Graduate Certificate in Theology from Denver Seminary. He served in the U.S. Army from 1988 to 1999 where he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal along with other awards and achievements. He has assisted in the planting of three churches and served in evangelical missions within multiple organizations. He was the Deacon of Youth at Northeast Bible Church from 1997 to 2001. He was an Elder and then the Chair of Counsel of Elders at Centennial Covenant Church for a total of 6 years and is currently the lead of the Security and Properties Ministries at Centennial Covenant. He has spent over 25 years in the Information Technology sector and is currently the IT Senior Manager for Cigna Healthcare.

A Biblical Scholar’s Journey: From Hierarchy to Mutuality

Today we talk with Dr. Richard Hess, an esteemed Old Testament scholar as he shares his journey from a hierarchical understanding of gender relations to one of non-hierarchical mutuality. Dr. Richard, or Rick, Hess is the Distinguished Professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Denver Seminary. Having studied at both Jewish and Christian seminaries, he earned a PhD from Hebrew Union College, an MDiv and a ThM from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a BA from Wheaton College. He has completed postdoctoral studies and research in Chicago, Jerusalem, Cambridge, Münster, and Sheffield; and taught in Glasgow and London before moving to Denver. He has authored seven books, hundreds of articles and reviews, and edited more than sixty volumes. He is a member of the NIV Committee on Bible Translation and edits Denver Seminary’s online Denver Journal. Dr. Hess also has a website called oldtestamentquestions.com

Mutuality and Spiritual Formation – Better Together

In this episode, we will be engaging in a conversation about mutuality, specifically how mutuality supports our spiritual formation. Joining us is Yvonne Biel. She is a former missionary teacher, young adult pastor, and Formation Pastor in Denver and graduate of Denver Seminary. She presently works as a spiritual director with a small ministry team in the Denver area called Chronic Hope and Healing. Yvonne’s passionate about making God accessible to others and seeing genuine transformation happen in the lives of God’s children by leading inner healing breakthrough experiences for individuals and groups in the name of Jesus Christ.

Mutuality, Counseling, and Missions

Joining us on this podcast is Kirsten Adorno. Kirsten graduated from Denver Seminary’s counselling program and currently works as a counsellor at Full Bloom Counseling Center where she serves people living in Colorado. In addition, Kirsten uses her gifts and talents in intercultural ministry by serving as a member of the counselling team for World Venture. Members of this widely recognized and respected Christian nonprofit organization seek to equip, train, and care for over 500 long-term career missionaries serving in over 65 countries. You will be blessed as you hear Kirsten’s personal story and listen to her insights into ways to navigate mutuality as a woman in private life, in the counselling field, and alongside others serving in cross-cultural ministry.
