In Job 26, Job responds to Bildad's six-verse speech with sarcasm and then something better. After three verses of biting irony — "how you have helped the powerless!" — Job launches into a cosmological hymn that goes deeper and further than anything Bildad offered. Sheol, the suspended earth, the clouds, the horizon, the mountains, the defeated sea monster. Then he stops: and these are but the outer fringe. The faint whisper. Who can understand the thunder?
