On This Day in Old Time Radio – September 7th | Classic Radio Broadcasts That Aired On This Date

For September 7, I’ve put together a wonderful mix of classic broadcasts featuring The Great Gildersleeve, Suspense, Hollywood Star Playhouse, The Lone Ranger, and Lux Radio Theatre. It’s a little bit of comedy, mystery, drama, adventure, and Hollywood glamour — just the way old-time radio ought to be. And before we tune in, let’s take a quick look at what was happening on this day in history: On September 7, 1940, “I’ll Never Smile Again” by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, featuring Frank Sinatra and the Pied Pipers, was sitting at number one on Billboard’s best-selling retail-record chart. It became one of the defining recordings of the early Sinatra era. But September 7, 1940 was also marked by something far more serious. It was the day the London Blitz began, when German aircraft launched a massive daylight bombing raid against London. The attacks continued into the night and marked the beginning of the main phase of the Blitz, a period that would test the endurance and courage of the British people for months to come. EPISODE LIST: 00:00 - The Great Gildersleeve "Marjorie's Cake" 09-07-1941 29:47 - Suspense "Voyage Through Darkness" 09-07-1944 57:42 - Hollywood Star Playhouse "The Tenth Planet" 09-07-1952 1:27:09 - The Lone Ranger "A Deal in Crime" 09-07-1949 1:56:37 - Lux Radio Theater "Is Zat So?" 09-07-1936 (Slight sound quality issues) This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth 🧸 – Luxury sheets, home goods, pajamas & loungewear and so much more!
