Mainstreet Unscripted EP:8 - Why Downtown Casa Grande?

In the episode we are in a brand new studio! We are so excited to be able to record in such a great space. It wasn't without hurdles to overcome. You may notice a little audio sync issue with the full studio shot as we put new cameras to work. The image quality for the close up has improved but there are still kinks too sort out. This week we are talking about why business, entrepreneurs, and investors are flocking to the Downtown District. To talk about his experience Mike Angelo from Nimble Capitol Group joins us. Hear what he has to say about what lead him to engage in the largest renovation project downtown in decades.

Mainstreet Unscripted EP:7 Part 1

Holly has been in conference mode and learning from other Mainstreet organizations what works and what doesn't to apply it to the Casa Grande Downtown District. She lost a shirt in the process but gained knowledge and validation for the directions Casa Grande Mainstreet has been taking the district. Conferences attended Downtown Matters in Flagstaff, AZ Rural Policy Forum in Kingman, AZ Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Tucson, AZ Main take-aways: “Software upgrade requires a Hardware upgrade” – Jon Jon, aka The Happy Urbanist If we want people to spend more time Downtown, we need to change the landscape and atmosphere to cater to the desired outcome. The main ways this will happen is to deter vehicle traffic, increase walkability and bike-ability, and take steps towards enhancing our “sense of place”. Consumers are craving experiences, and walking is an experience—especially in a Downtown that has an established sense of place! When it comes to creating a sense of place, the Strong Towns approach is amazing! However, Mainstreet cannot do this alone. There are small actions that Downtown businesses can take which will reinforce the Downtown atmosphere that invites and caters to foot-traffic and consumers (hello, outdoor music!). Afterall, the community IS the destination!

For a list of those events visit https://www.cgmainstreet.com/index.php/event Who's Collaborating with us? For this episode we brought in Emmi Rakoci, the Artistic Director for the Black Box Foundation, a local community theater in Downtown Casa Grande. Emmi and Blackbox Foundation are community partners with Casa Grande Main Street that work directly with us to participate, enhance, and entertain at our community events. We dive into how and why Blackbox is not just a Main Street partner but an entity that really looks for how to leverage the opportunities created by Main Street to promote their foundation while providing fun and interesting entertainment for us. We dive a little bit into some of the negatives of not collaborating and why and how it hurts the Down Town community as a whole.
