Drift: a nautical term; to hold a ship toward port fastening of the anchors to the sea bed to keep the ship from drifting; the nautical metaphor of the anchor occurs in Hebrews 6:19. Bible does not have study notes - just Biblical references Significance of verse 3 “of those who heard” The message of salvation was proclaimed to those who did not have the privilege of hearing the Lord by those who had been witnesses to his word and deed. In reference to these witnesses, it is not necessary to think of the apostolic company. It is significant that in Hebrews the office of apostle is reserved for Jesus alone (3:1). The highest office the writer acknowledges within the larger Christian community is that of a “hearer,” i.e., one who could testify concerning the truth that Jesus had declared because he had heard the Lord. By speaking of “the hearers” (τῶν ἀκουσάντων), all interest is concentrated on the message, not the office, of those who had brought the word of redemption to the community
