Somewhere out there right now, someone is handing you advice about what's next for you... your career, extra income, retirement planning... and they've never actually lived what you're living. This episode is about how to tell the difference between advice that's real and advice that just sounds real.

Trish starts with a quote she keeps coming back to: "don't take advice from someone who isn't in the position you want to be in." That's a good filter, but it's not the whole filter because plenty of people have actually done the thing and still shouldn't be the ones you're listening to. There's a second, sneakier test underneath it, and Trish learned it the expensive way.

Inside the episode:

  • The real problem: why buying the guide, joining the paid community, following resume advice from someone who hasn't job hunted in decades, or taking retirement advice from an influencer who's never had their income disappear overnight are all the same underlying problem wearing different outfits
  • The quote, and why it's only step one: "don't take advice from someone who isn't in the position you want to be in" is a good filter, but not the whole filter
  • The second, sneakier test: even when someone has actually done the thing, are they handing you the whole picture, or just enough to keep you paying for the next module or the next tier
  • Trish's own rabbit hole: the twenty-dollar playbooks that only covered the basics, the mastermind that felt productive because she was busy, and the conversation with her accountant, asking about a stack of recurring charges, that made her realize she'd found a very well-designed rabbit hole, not a shortcut
  • The version of this that has nothing to do with business: what it looks like to take resume advice from someone who's never had an AI screening filter silently reject them, or faced being told they're "not a culture fit" at fifty-plus
  • What's yours: the questions to ask about whose voice you're actually trusting with your next chapter, and what it's already cost you in time you can't get back
  • Holding herself to the same standard: why Trish tells you exactly what the Digital Dashboard does and doesn't do, because if she's asking you to hold other people to the whole-picture test, she has to hold herself to it too

Your reminder today:

You get to be picky about who you let influence your next thing. That's not distrustful. That's just smart.
