Marie Curie discovered radium, transformed cancer treatment, and helped treat over a million wounded soldiers during World War One. At a time when radium was selling for $100,000 a gram, she and Pierre could have patented the process and become two of the wealthiest scientists in history.

Instead, she gave the formula to the world for free, declaring that "radium belongs to everyone." In this episode of Very Human History, Sergio explores the incredible sacrifices behind Marie Curie’s legacy, from Poland’s underground Flying University to freezing Parisian attics; and poses an uncomfortable hypothetical question:

What if she had kept the fortune? Would we still see her as a hero, or would history have turned on her?
