We’re taught that independence is the goal.

Be self-sufficient. Handle your own shit. Don’t be a burden. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Need less. Do more. Figure it out yourself.

And there’s nothing wrong with being capable of standing on your own.

But what happens when “I can do it myself” quietly becomes “I have to do it myself”?

In Episode 3 of High Frequency, Low Noise, we’re talking about the complicated relationship between independence, vulnerability, and connection—and what happens when self-sufficiency stops being a strength and starts becoming a defense mechanism.

We’re getting into:

🧠 Hyper-independence — why some of us become so determined not to need anyone that asking for help starts to feel almost impossible.

🫂 Vulnerability — why letting people show up for us can feel more uncomfortable than doing everything ourselves.

🤝 Codependence, intradependence & interdependence — and why these concepts aren't interchangeable.

🏠 Community & connection — how we've gone from intensely interconnected local communities to a world where we can be connected to thousands of people and still feel completely alone.

💭 Asking for help — why needing other people isn't necessarily weakness, and why receiving support can be just as difficult as offering it.

And we’re asking a bigger question:

What if independence isn't the opposite of dependence?

Maybe the goal isn't to need nobody.

Maybe it's to become independent enough to stand on our own, intradependent enough to understand ourselves, and interdependent enough to know when we don't have to.

Because there's a strange contradiction in modern life: we're more connected than ever, but we're increasingly expected to solve our problems individually.

Maybe sometimes we're trying to solve collective problems individually.

And maybe rebuilding community doesn't mean giving up our autonomy. Maybe it means figuring out how to belong without disappearing—and how to rely on other people without losing ourselves.
