Lessons from a Cicada

This week Justin Cook shares a simple but meaningful devotion sparked by an unexpected visitor — a cicada that flew into his truck window while he was driving home from a run.

Looking at the short and unusual life of the cicada, Justin draws out three lessons from God’s creation:

1. Life is short Adult cicadas only live a few weeks. Psalm 39 reminds us that our lives are brief and fleeting. We are not promised tomorrow, so we are called to make the most of the days we are given.
2. Adulthood requires preparation Cicadas spend years underground preparing for their short adult life. In the same way, parents have the important responsibility of preparing their children’s hearts, minds, and character for the future.
