Grand Convos

por Margaret & Amanda
Temporada 1
Grand Rapids on the Big Screen (and Everywhere Else)
Grand Rapids has been hiding in pop culture this whole time. In this episode, we’re digging into the weird, wild and surprisingly extensive ways GR has shown up in movies, TV, music and other media. Learn how 50 Cent almost became a Grand Rapidian, why Margaret has VERY strong feelings about a certain type of underwear, and what iconic movie from our teenage years was heavily influenced by Grand Rapids. Grab a bevvy and learn some things with us — because apparently Grand Rapids has been getting screen time this entire time and nobody told us.
Grand Yappin: Fresca, Feelings & Financial Decisions
It’s a Grand Yappin’, so naturally… we have absolutely no idea where this conversation is going. Amanda spills the tea on her pet psychic reading, we get into the very serious science of girl math, collectively decide we do NOT want the new iPhone, and somehow end up talking about Fresca. No theme. No agenda. Just two broads yappin’. Grab a bevvy, settle in, and come yap with us.
$3 Hot Dogs, Artprize & The Death of the Press
Grand Rapids is changing ... and we have QUESTIONS! This week on Grand Convos, we’re talking about some pretty major changes happening around our city. The Griffins have officially bumped their legendary Friday beer and hot dog deal to $3 after years of $2, and even longer ago when you could get both for just ONE DOLLAR. We’re digging into the history of the promotion and asking the question everyone is thinking: is a $3 hot dog still a deal? Then, the Grand Rapids Press is saying goodbye to the printed newspaper. After generations of Sunday mornings with the Press on our doorsteps, December will mark the end of physical newspaper production. What does that mean for local news...and are we ready for a city without a newspaper? Of course, we have to talk ArtPrize. We’re going back to where this whole giant Grand Rapids experiment started, sharing some of the weirdest and wildest ArtPrize facts, and looking ahead to this year’s competition...including what we think could be the entries to watch. And finally, we’re getting into the ongoing debate over ICE, Mayor David LaGrand, GRPD and Flock cameras. Activists are demanding more accountability and questioning the city’s relationship with federal immigration enforcement, while city officials maintain that the cameras and local police are being used for public safety. Basically: Grand Rapids is changing, and we’re trying to figure out whether we’re excited, nostalgic, confused… or all three. Grab a $3 hot dog and come yap with us.
Kesha Was Loud, Lime Is Out & Michigan Is NOT Lazy!!
Explícito
Kesha, noise ordinances, scooters, and… Michigan’s work ethic?! This week on Grand Convos, we’re covering a little bit of EVERYTHING happening around Grand Rapids. We’re recapping the Kesha concert at Acrisure Amphitheater and talking about the latest legal drama surrounding the venue—including a new ruling from a Grand Rapids judge that prohibits the theater from violating the city’s noise ordinance. And just when you thought we were done with transportation drama… Lime is OUT, and a new scooter company is getting ready to hit the streets of Grand Rapids. But the biggest controversy of all? A study says Michigan is the LEAST hard working state in the country. And, respectfully… WHAT?! We’re calling a big ol’ BS on that one. As always, we’ll get to the actual topics eventually, take a few detours along the way, and probably have a few opinions we weren’t planning on having. Grab your headphones and come yap with us!
What the Flock?!: Big Brother or Big Help?
What the flock is a Flock camera?! 👀 This week on Grand Convos, we're diving into the increasingly controversial world of Flock cameras. What exactly are they? Why do police departments love them? What are they actually being used for? And why are people in our community raising some VERY serious concerns about them? We're breaking down the good, the bad, the creepy, and the downright controversial—from stolen cars and crime-solving to privacy concerns, data sharing, immigration enforcement, and all the questions surrounding just how much of our daily driving should be tracked. And because this is Grand Convos, obviously we take several completely unnecessary detours along the way. 😂 So buckle up, keep your license plate visible, and join us as we ask the question everyone's thinking: WHAT THE FLOCK?! Hopefully one of those cameras doesn't catch us yappin'...
Grand Yappin: Millennials Ruined Everything (Apparently)
Apparently, millennials have ruined everything. Chain restaurants. Homeownership. Napkins. The economy. Probably the dinosaurs, too. This week on Grand Yappin', we're finally getting the chance to air our millennial grievances. Why do Boomers blame us for everything while Gen Z makes fun of us at the same time? Why are we still the unpaid IT department for our entire family? And can we please just enjoy skinny jeans and our side parts in peace? From technology and college debt to buying a house, social media, work, and everything in between, we're breaking down the unique joys (and frustrations) of growing up in the generation that remembers both dial-up internet and TikTok. It's nostalgic, it's mildly rage inducing, and it's full of the unnecessary tangents, giggles, and gumption you've come to expect from Grand Yappin'. Come vent with us—because if we're going to get blamed for everything, we might as well have fun talking about it.
The Stories Behind the Signs
You know the streets. You know the parks. You know the buildings. But…do you know WHO they're named after? This week on Grand Convos, we're taking a closer look at the people behind some of Grand Rapids' most familiar names. From streets and neighborhoods to parks, buildings and landmarks, we're uncovering the stories behind the names we see every day. Some of these people you'll recognize. Others? You might be thinking, "Wait…WHO is that?!" We're sharing the history, the weird stories, the surprising connections and a few facts that will probably make you look at Grand Rapids a little differently the next time you're driving around town. Basically, we're doing the research so you can say, "Oh yeah, I know who THAT was" the next time you pass the sign. Come learn something with us—you might even leave the episode feeling slightly smarter than you did when you started.
Grand Yappin': From Cringe to Cheers
This week on Grand Yappin', we're taking you on an emotional roller coaster...and honestly, we didn't even buy tickets. First stop: the social media trends we absolutely cannot stand. The ones that make us want to throw our phones across the room, mute the internet, and ask, "Who started this?!" But don't worry—we don't stay salty forever. We flip the script and end on a high note with the little things that instantly make life better. The videos, moments, and random joys that can turn a bad day around in seconds. It's a journey with plenty of twists, turns, tangents, giggles, gumption, and everything in between. Because if there's one thing Grand Yappin' is good at...it's taking the scenic route.
Can You Speak Michigan?
Ope...we've got game for you! This week we're testing each other (and you) with Michigan or Made Up? One of us reads a word or phrase, and the other has to guess whether it's an actual Michigan saying, a Midwest classic, or something we totally made up. From "party store" and "fudgie" to some absolutely ridiculous fake terms, we're celebrating the strange, charming, and sometimes confusing language of the Mitten State. Grab your Vernors, squeeze past someone with an "ope," and play along! We also break down the words, the way we say them, and the communication that makes us uniquely Michigan...we even have a special GR category!
Grand Yappin': Celebrity Demands & Death Row Dinners
This week on Grand Yappin', we're diving into the wonderfully weird world of celebrity riders. What does your favorite celeb really demand backstage? Private chefs? Designer toilet paper? Bowls of candy with suspiciously specific rules? We break down some of the most outrageous requests and decide which ones are genius...and which ones are just plain extra. Then we're asking the ultimate impossible question: if tomorrow was your last day, what would your final meal be? From comfort food to guilty pleasures (and a few controversial picks), we're serving up our dream menus. Oh...and somehow we end up talking about turtle soup. Who thought that was a good idea?! It's yappin', it's cappin'...or whatever the kids are saying these days. (We're definitely not cool enough to know.)
