Six Miles off the Line: Frontier Speculation, Cognitive Flexibility, and the Ghost Town of Fountain

Generations at the Museum - Season 1 Episode 15

In November 1877, Dr. Chauncey Kelsey stood in the bluestem grass of eastern Dakota Territory and staked his family’s entire future on a theoretical dot on the map. He wasn't just predicting the path of the oncoming Chicago & North Western Railroad; he was convincing dozens of Minnesota neighbors that their paper metropolis of Fountain was certain. But when corporate rail surveyors shifted their line just six miles south, an entire town collided head-on with cold cognitive reality.

The episode cover art depicts a land plat map with township grids generated from historical narrative prompts (Adobe, 2026).
