China has drawn a lot of attention in recent decades as a rising superpower that is challenging the liberal International World Order and the US as a global hegemon. Nonetheless, China’s very rich history and its importance for Xi Jinping’s ideology is not very well known in the discourse surrounding it. The remembrance of the Second World War is a striking example of how historical narratives are utilized for the construction of a national identity in China.
