The End of the Two-Party System in the UK? (with Dr. Leonardo Carella)

Hit by a cost-of-living crisis and increasing polarization, UK politics has been in a state of turmoil for quite some time. With the latest prime minister, Keir Starmer, resigning on the 22nd of June and emerging parties like Reform UK and the Greens challenging the status quo of the UK's two-party system, we currently stand at a crossroads regarding how the political and electoral system of the UK will develop. In this episode, Shonah and Iván invite Dr. Leonardo Carella of the Department of Government to talk about the most recent developments in British politics, from the resignation of Keir Starmer and the prospects for the Labour Party under a new PM to the rise of Reform UK and the role of immigration. Frauen und der neue Rechtskonservatismus (mit Rebekka Pflug, MA)

Warum engagieren sich Frauen in rechten Organisationen? Die politische Beteiligung von Frauen ist ebenso vielfältig wie die von Männern. Dabei wird Frauen, die rechte Politik machen, oft vorgeworfen, sie würden damit gegen ihre eigenen Interessen der Gleichstellung eintreten. In dieser Folge sprechen Maya und David mit Rebekka Pflug über den neuen Rechtskonservatismus, das Engagement von Frauen in rechten zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen und Fragen der Identitätspolitik.

The European Union and its Eastern Neighbourhood (with Dr. David Gazsi)

The European Union is a quite unique political institution, which has to constantly redefine itself to deal with newly emerging challenges in a quickly changing international political arena. In this episode, David and Iván invited Dr. David Gazsi of the IPW to discuss the EU's relationship with its Eastern neighbourhood. The future of EU enlargement, Russia's changing presence in the region and the war in Ukraine are just some of the topics we talked about. This episode was recorded on 10th June.

Ungarn nach den Wahlen (mit Dr. Eszter Kováts)

Am 12. April 2026 haben in Ungarn historische Wahlen stattgefunden, bei denen Viktor Orbán, der das Land 16 Jahre lang regiert und in dieser Zeit die demokratischen Institutionen zunehmend ausgehöhlt hat, abgewählt wurde. Das Orbán-Regime galt für viele als Vorreiter einer neuen Art eines autoritären Führungsstils, der von anderen Parteien der europäischen und globalen Rechten als Vorbild gefeiert wurde. In einem Erdrutschsieg konnte sein Herausforderer, Péter Magyar, ein ehemaliger Fidesz-Parteikollege, mit seiner Partei "Tisza" mehr als 2/3 der Parlamentssitze für sich gewinnen. Wie kann der überraschende Rücktritt Orbáns und die aktuelle Situation nach der Wahl beurteilt werden? Was kommt in den nächsten Monaten auf die ungarische Regierung zu? Diese und andere Fragen besprechen Iván und David in dieser Folge mit Dr. Eszter Kováts, der ausgewiesenen Ungarn-Expertin und Forscherin am IPW. Diese Folge wurde am 14. Mai aufgezeichnet.

Radikale Demokratie und ziviler Ungehorsam (mit Dr. Anna Wieder)

In der zweiten Folge des IPW-Podcasts sprechen Moritz und David mit Dr. Anna Wieder über radikale Demokratie und die Rolle des zivilen Ungehorsams. Es geht um die Rückbesinnung auf die Wurzeln der Demokratie, den zivilen Ungehorsam als (radikal-)demokratische Widerstandspraxis und die umstrittenen Proteste der Klimabewegung. Die Überlegungen zur radikalen Demokratie eröffnen neue Sichtweisen auf das, was wir unter "Demokratie" verstehen und können auch unsere politische Imagination bereichern.
