Backstage with the Discussants and the Stones?

Come backstage with Doc G and the Discussants for a Friday show that starts with rock royalty and ends in the trash. First, they examine the Rolling Stones’ Foreign Tongues: Is it genuinely good, or are critics grading Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on a curve because they are still making records in their eighties? The album gets a track-by-track test, a place in the Stones catalog and a final verdict. Then the standards fall considerably as Trash TV Friday takes over with 90 Day Fiancé and Baylen Out Loud..

Schools Don’t Fail—Students Do. The Back to School Episode

Schools don’t learn—students do. In this back-to-school episode, Doc G and the Discussants dispense with programs, slogans and familiar excuses to ask who is really responsible for a student’s success. They lay out ten practical rules students can use to take control of their futures, challenge parents to maintain high expectations without imposing artificial limits, and tell teachers what every student is owed from the adults entrusted with a year of childhood. Then comes the larger question: Have we made education far more complicated than it needs to be?

The Cold Civil War—Is It Getting Hot?

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to stalking and shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson—but the larger story is the public admiration, memes and fundraising that followed. Doc G and the Discussants trace the road from Occupy’s 99% versus 1%, through BLM, CHOP and organized socialism, to a politics that divides society into oppressors and oppressed. When a person becomes the face of a hated system, how much easier does violence become to excuse? The show also examines the attacks involving Charlie Kirk and Donald Trump and asks whether America’s cold civil war is getting hot.

Dragons, Dynasties & Trash TV Friday

Dragons, dynasties, betrayal, family warfare—and then we lower the production budget. Doc G and the Discussants start with House of the Dragon after the Season 3 finale. The war has finally widened, King’s Landing has changed hands, and the Dance of the Dragons is in full swing. But one question keeps coming back: why does a very good series still feel smaller than Game of Thrones? Is it the tighter Targaryen focus, the smaller world, or characters who simply have less room to grow? Then it is Trash TV Friday: Baylen Out Loud, Below Deck, bad decisions, questionable relationships, luxury yachts, and people who probably should know better. Because sometimes culture means dragons. Sometimes it means reality television. And sometimes the difference is mostly the budget.

Where Is the Line? When Medicine Alters a Healthy Body

Doctors alter healthy bodies all the time. Cosmetic surgery can change a healthy nose, breast, face or abdomen even when nothing is physically wrong. So if altering healthy tissue can be acceptable medicine, where does medicine draw the line? Doc G and the Discussants put that principle to the test. What happens when a competent adult with Body Integrity Dysphoria asks a surgeon to remove a perfectly healthy limb? If autonomy, psychological suffering and informed consent can justify one irreversible procedure, why not another? And when should a physician's judgment override what a patient says he or she wants? Then comes the harder comparison: cosmetic surgery, healthy-limb amputation and medical intervention affecting healthy sex characteristics or normal development in a minor. They are not the same conditions or procedures—but they expose the same underlying questions about autonomy, evidence, psychological distress, consent and irreversible harm. If medicine can alter a healthy body in one case but refuses in another, what coherent principle explains where the line belongs?

First, Do No Harm? Pediatric Transgender Procedures, Detransition & Medical Ethics

What does “do no harm” mean when medicine itself cannot agree on what constitutes harm? Texas Children’s has reached a settlement requiring it to end specified pediatric gender-transition procedures, provide detransition care, and permanently exclude five physicians from its system. Cleveland Clinic and Connecticut Children’s have also reached federal agreements. Meanwhile, CMS is ending federal Medicaid and CHIP funding for specified procedures for minors, while the AMA and American Academy of Pediatrics continue to support access to evidence-based gender-affirming care. Doc G and the Discussants look past the slogans and ask the harder questions: What does the evidence actually establish? Why were five Texas physicians singled out? How much can a child understand about potentially irreversible treatment? What do parents owe their children? And when institutions disagree, what does the physician owe the patient? Because “first, do no harm” is easy when everyone agrees about what harm is. The difficult cases begin when they don't.

WE’RE NOT TAKING THE FIFTH -- We Watched It. We Admit It.

We could take the Fifth. We could consult counsel. We could deny everything. But the evidence is overwhelming: we watched it. This time, Doc G & The Discussants put politics aside and confess to what has actually been occupying our television. We start with Apple TV’s Cape Fear, another trip into the world of Max Cady and a story Hollywood apparently cannot leave alone. We get into the series, its performances, what works, what doesn’t—and whether there was really enough left in Cape Fear to justify doing it all over again. Then we abandon whatever claim to cultural sophistication we had left. Trash TV Friday is back. There’s Baylen Out Loud, 90 Day Fiancé, and Love After Lockup—an assortment of relationships, families, personalities and decisions that regularly leave us asking why anyone would do these things. Followed immediately by the more troubling question: Why the hell are we watching them? We have no defense. We have no alibi. And unlike Anthony Fauci, we’re not taking the Fifth. We watched it. We admit it. The truth is more interesting than fiction and far more valuable than clichés or talking points.

UNCONDITIONAL MEANS UNCONDITIONAL … OR DOES IT?

Words matter—particularly when presidents use them to describe war. In 1945, President Harry Truman and the Allies demanded the unconditional surrender of Japan. We know what followed, and we know what surrender ultimately looked like. Donald Trump has invoked that same extraordinary standard in the war with Iran: unconditional surrender. So where is it? In this episode, Doc G & The Discussants compare the administration’s early confidence and declarations of victory with the war as it actually stands today. Iran has not unconditionally surrendered. The conflict has not simply disappeared. And the Strait of Hormuz—opened, closed, threatened, reopened and explained differently depending upon the day—has become part of an increasingly complicated story about what victory is supposed to mean. Then there are the promises. Trump campaigned as the president who would keep America out of new wars and end the seemingly endless ones. We examine those promises against the decisions that brought the United States here—and ask what happened to them. And when Americans complain about higher gasoline prices, Trump has pointed the finger at oil companies for charging too much. That raises another question: Who gets to decide when a price is excessive? We look at that argument alongside what Trump himself charges for hotel rooms, rounds of golf, watches, sneakers and other products bearing his name. Finally, we come back to the question that matters most: How does this war end? What would victory actually look like? What happens if the administration cannot achieve the unconditional surrender it invoked? And what does the outcome mean for a presidency that promised something very different? This isn't 1945. Iran isn't Imperial Japan. And those differences are precisely why the comparison is worth examining. Unconditional means unconditional. Or does it? The truth is more interesting than fiction and far more valuable than clichés or talking points.

AYATOLLAH SO! The DSA Is on the Way

We told you so. Or, in this case, I Ayatollah so. The wordplay has nothing to do with Abdul El-Sayed's religion or ethnicity. It comes from politics—and from the leaked campaign audio in which El-Sayed said he didn't want to comment on the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei because “a lot of people in Dearborn” were sad. Now El-Sayed has won Michigan's Democratic nomination for the United States Senate, defeating the establishment-backed Haley Stevens and putting one of the country's most closely watched progressive campaigns on the November ballot. Doc G & The Discussants examine the candidate rather than the caricature: El-Sayed's economic agenda, Medicare for All, his position on U.S. aid to Israel, his views on Israel and the Palestinians, the Khamenei recording, and his continuing association with Hasan Piker—even after Piker's infamous 9/11 remark became an issue in the campaign. El-Sayed has called that remark “dumb” and said Piker disavowed it. And then comes the larger question we've been asking since Communism Anyone? El-Sayed does not call himself a democratic socialist; he has described himself as a capitalist. So why are ideas and political forces once associated with the activist left becoming increasingly consequential in Democratic electoral politics? And after Michigan Democrats actually chose El-Sayed, are we still talking about the political fringe—or are we watching the party change? The DSA is on the way. We told you so. The truth is more interesting than fiction and far more valuable than clichés or talking points.

Communisim Part 3: Causes, Cures... and Trash TV Friday

Why are so many young Americans reconsidering capitalism—and even expressing favorable views of socialism and communism? The Discussants conclude their three-part series by examining what may be driving this shift, including the results of the Harvard Kennedy School's national survey of young Americans, recent election results, and the broader cultural forces influencing political attitudes. Then it's time for the debut of Trash TV Friday. From 90 Day Fiancé and Big Brother to Love After Lockup, why are millions of people drawn to television they freely admit is terrible? Is it simply entertainment, or does it reveal something important about modern culture? Evidence, humor, disagreement, and a willingness to challenge assumptions—without slogans, clichés, or talking points. The truth is more interesting than fiction—and far more valuable than clichés or talking points.
