Unrecognised War Veterans’ Struggle Raises Concern

The aftermath of Heroes’ Day. A picture and a video circulating on social media have highlighted the story of Christopher Likando Mulala, an unrecognised war veteran. His sister, Dorothy Nfwile, states that he is allegedly suffering from mental illness and poverty in his village outside Katima Mulilo. This story has sparked an important conversation about our nation’s heroes and the state of their welfare. To help us understand the broader context of this situation, and what it means for our society, Desert FM is joined by Professor Johann Coetzee.

Heroes’ Day Address Under the Spotlight

The nation’s attention was on the Katima Mulilo Sports Complex, where Her Excellency President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah delivered her first Heroes’ Day keynote address as Head of State. The speech, which paid tribute to our fallen heroes, also outlined a clear vision for the nation’s future, touching on issues of national unity, economic development, and the fight against corruption. To help us dissect and understand the deeper political implications of the President’s address, Desert FM is joined by a renowned political analyst who is no stranger to our programme. He is a commentator on a wide range of national issues, from public policy to electoral politics Dr Ndumba Kamwanya.

For years, the residents of Groot Aub have voiced concerns about the impact of being formally integrated into the City of Windhoek. While the city argues that the move was intended to facilitate development and improve service delivery, many residents feel their community has instead been left behind. Joining Desert FM is a prominent voice from Groot Aub who has been at the forefront of this debate. He is a resident and community activist who has long advocated for the settlement to be excluded from the City of Windhoek Cecil Titus.

Johannes Johannes slams drought-food distribution as unfair and political

We turn our focus to Tsumeb, where chaotic drought-food queues have raised serious concerns about fairness and accountability. Reports indicate that even teachers, nurses, and police officers people earning well above the threshold were among those receiving food aid, while the unemployed and elderly were left behind or mistreated. Joining us to unpack this issue is activist Johannes ‘Jay Jay’ Johannes, who has been vocal about what he calls an abuse of power and an election campaign tactic at the expense of the most vulnerable.

Dobson Kwala weighs in as Ndopu-Lubinda, councillors face 80 corruption charges

Our next story takes us to the Zambezi region, where the chief regional officer, Regina Ndopu-Lubinda, has once again been implicated in a major corruption scandal. Alongside Linyanti constituency councillor Ivenne Kabunga and Solo Mutelo, she faces a combined 80 counts of tender-related corruption. The case, linked to the Zambezi Waterfront Tourism Park tender, has been transferred to the High Court due to its seriousness. This is not the first time Ndopu-Lubinda has found herself in the dock she was previously arrested in a separate N$4.7-million corruption case in 2023. Joined us insight into the matter and what this means for governance in the region is political analyst and commentator, Dobson Kwala.

Rosa Namises says new divorce law delays struggles and the promise of reform

A mother of three from Otjiwarongo finds herself financially drained and emotionally worn out, as her divorce hearing has been postponed for the fourth time. With mounting debts, no stable home, and uncertainty about her future, her case shines a spotlight on the urgent need for reform in how divorce cases are handled in our country. This comes as justice and labour relations minister, Wise Immanuel, has announced the commencement of the Dissolution of Marriages Act, 2024 — a law that promises to make divorce easier and more affordable for those who cannot access legal representation. To unpack what this means, and to explore the human impact of these legal delays, I’m joined by women’s rights activist Rosa Namises.
