Crest Podcast Ep15 - Mark Schofield, Part Two

The halcyon days of a surf industry boom, travel, more health setbacks and an opinionated take on modern surfing - the second half of Schof’s life story sees him tell Tom and Rob some fantastic tales. After founding what is now No Limit Wetsuits, Schof’s manufacturing and branding career went through the roof. Sponsoring Tom Curren and the Welsh Rugby Team preceded a second kidney failure, in response to which a BBC documentary team accompanied him to the Philippines to make a hard-hitting documentary which added pressure to UK governments to bring in ‘presumed consent’ for organ donation. Schof also talks frankly about his current health situation, before getting into his opinions on the condition of modern surfing - something we’re always happy to hear him debate. An enthralling discussion, from one of Wales’ greatest surf raconteurs. Produced by James Dodd & Tom Anderson Artwork by GS Design Co Music Copyright James Dodd 2020

Crest Podcast Ep14 - Mark Schofield, Part One

Quite simply one of our favourite people on earth! A European Champion who's also survived cancer twice and kidney failure twice (as well as getting his golf handicap below 3), Mark Schofield is one of the most enthralling people you could listen to in the English-speaking surf world. Thanks to a carefully constructed, once-off studio in his back garden, Schof has told the incredible ups and downs of his life to Tom and Rob. In part one of this tale, Schof talks of discovering surf stoke, his first realisation of being seriously ill, recovery and golf - before reflecting on why the period in which he won his titles was a golden age in Welsh surfing. Crest Podcast Ep13 - Mark 'Splinter' Griffiths

Explícito
Separating myth from man is the key challenge when dealing with a character of this magnitude. Often hailed as the 'best person to go on a trip with ever', as well as being the key protagonist in one of Wales' 'best surf tales ever', Splinter Griffiths wears these tags with humility and humour. The fact his dozens of major titles often take a back seat shows just how widely the skill-set is spread for one of the greatest bodyboarders these isles have produced. In this special interview, Tom and Rob are also joined by Dr Rhydian Lewis from Cardiff University's School of Mathematics - an old adversary of Splinter's. Dr Lewis, besides assisting with cutting myth from mechanics, also referees a Crest specialty event... Splint vs Richard Burton. Who walks away the undisputed cream of Port Talbot? Tune in to find out! Produced by James Dodd & Tom Anderson Artwork by GS Design Co Music Copyright James Dodd 2020

Crest Podcast Ep12 - Rob Miles

'I would say I am probably your average Welsh surfer... who just pushes his luck,' says Caerphilly's best export. This is an amazing insight into a uniquely gung-ho mindset - which has seen the unassuming Rob Miles take on Teahupoo, among many more of the world's most challenging pits. Expect humility, humour and many more nonchalant comments like, 'That was my, uh, second broken back', as we'll hear him tell Rob and Elliot. For this episode, the Garden Studio bears witness to how an inspirational surfing life can be forged many thousands of miles from the contest horn (literally). How do you score perfect waves with uncanny reliability? How do you dust off life-changing injury only to charge again months later? And how do you satisfy that appetite for the buzz, time and time again? This week's guest is many things. But 'your average Welsh surfer' is certainly not one of them... Crest Podcast Ep11 - Mark Vaughan

One of the truly giant personalities in Welsh Surfing, Llantwit's Mark Vaughan tells Tom and Rob of a life in surf - which more and more, nowadays, seems to happen in boardies (yes, we do find out why... sort of). This is someone who's been present for, or participating in, many of the biggest moments in the recent surf history of both the British Isles and Europe, and in this frank, open, entertaining and perceptively reflective memoir interview, Vaughanie shares what that ride has been like from behind the wheel. Crest Podcast Ep10 - Glyn Ovens

A Welshman... at Nazare? Yes, the world's gnarliest big-wave destination does indeed have a regular from God's Land, and Glyn Ovens now tells Tom and Elliot all about his journey into becoming one of the planet's most daring surfers. How does someone from Tal-y-Bont in Ceredigion end up winning international events in Mullaghmore, charging Mavericks and towing into the Portuguese monster nowadays widely agreed to be the premier proving ground on the world stage? All this, plus his love of waffles and Welsh cakes. Produced by James Dodd Artwork by GS Design Co Music Copyright James Dodd 2020

Crest Podcast Ep9 - Gwen Spurlock

In this first full-length interview in Crest's Garden Studio, the British Team Manager for 2020 and beyond tells Tom and Rob all about her journey to becoming one of Wales' most formidable competitors - and how she's brought the lessons learned into a coaching career. When and how will the UK produce a surfing Olympian? And what will that mean for the future of a sport which is traditionally counter-culture in its roots? The debate is only getting started... Crest Podcast Ep8 - Surf Travel Nightmares: Part Two

Crest's 'paean to pain' continues with tales from Peru, Panama, Samoa, France, Ireland, England, Scotland, more Indonesia and of course God's Land itself. Tom, Rob and Elliot assess all of our nightmare surf tales, and we learn the winners of the Crest Surf Trip Gone Wrong Awards. Crest Podcast Ep7 - Surf Travel Nightmares: Part One

Who misses surf trips, eh? Not us! (We're trying to believe that, at least.) As promised, with travel still off the agenda for a while, our collection of terrible tales kicks off with a prolonged look at the joys, the hardships and the challenges of travel to Indonesia. With Tom and Rob joined by double European Longboard Champion Elliot Dudley, the team also reviews and rates the surf trip nightmares offered up by our previous guests - setting up an overnight leader board for the Crest Surf Trip Gone Wrong Awards. Crest Podcast Ep6 - Luke Young

Top UK Shaper Luke Young walks Tom and Rob through the individual stages of designing, shaping, spraying and glassing - with a level of detail you won't hear often. Besides discussing materials, rail shapes and the ongoing debate about the use of machines, Luke also shares his experiences building boards for big-wave riders to use at Mullaghmore, as well as his time learning from Hawaiian legend Pat Rawson. From the sublime, to the ridiculous, we're also told how exactly Luke ended up furnishing none other than the Newport rap group Goldie Lookin' Chain with a set of sticks... All this, as well as another surf trip nightmare, this time from Wayne Edwards in South Australia. Produced by James Dodd Artwork by GS Design Co Music Copyright James Dodd 2020
