Windham School District in Texas has one hundred campuses and over forty CTE programs — welding, construction, CDL, the same NCCER credentials your kids are chasing. Every campus is inside a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility. There is a welding instructor somewhere in Texas who drives to work, goes through a metal detector, and teaches shop. A state grant bought them augmented reality welding simulators. Their partner college runs CDL training out of two Freightliner semis, pointing at careers paying $50,000 to $110,000. And at their recent College and Career Day, one of the keynote speakers was a graduate of their welding program who now works with the American Welding Society. When a state decides the most effective thing it can do with its hardest population is teach them a trade, that's not a soft endorsement of shop class. That's the highest-stakes bet available, placed on us. And it works for the same reason your program works: the work doesn't know where you learned it. The lesson: your vision, their labor. Two weeks ago the advice was "don't chase shiny technology, a four-dollar laminated sheet counts as a tool." That was about tools in the room with kids. This is about the job you do alone at your desk on a Sunday — and it's a different answer to the same rule. Feed AI your actual curriculum instead of clever prompts. Get consistency across twenty years of handouts that look like eleven different people made them. Get Spanish versions of your safety procedures. Build a sidekick that knows your shop, not a vending machine you start over with every week. And check everything, because you're the expert and it isn't. The rant: nothing. It's fine. CTE might be the last bipartisan issue in America. Everybody agrees with us now — which is the most dangerous moment a movement ever has. New research says intensive CTE works: better jobs, better wages, real outcomes for kids the academic track was losing. But when comprehensive high schools just expanded their offerings, there was little effect on graduation and four-year college enrollment went down. The variable is intensity. Not exposure. And we're about to get expansion without fidelity. The lesson: multi-teacher programs, and the two questions that matter more than any org chart. Do you have genuinely different expertise — or three of the same specialist in different rooms? And would a kid describe your program, or just name a teacher? The rant: I used to be the guy with the biggest program in the building. And I let everybody know it. Toolbox: the drill tests the procedure. It doesn't test the room.

Brown University looked at 1.74 million California students and found something the trades have known for three hundred years: attempting the hard thing and failing beats never attempting it at all. But only when somebody's standing close enough to catch it. In the shop, your mistake gets corrected and disappears into your skill. On a transcript, it gets recorded and follows you. Same kid, same mistake, completely different treatment. The lesson: technology in your shop. Name the job first, pick the tool second — and yes, the four-dollar laminated checkoff sheet counts as a tool. Plus how to convert one thing at a time without wrecking your year. This is a different kind of episode. Two news stories, both about what happens when the system fails to show up. First — the federal investigation into the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System, one of the largest CTE districts in the country, over the handling of alleged staff-on-student sexual misconduct. Handled with weight. No speculation, no rant, just the facts and what they mean for every CTE teacher this summer: mandatory reporting refreshers, personal boundary frameworks in trust-heavy hands-on pathways, and the courage to report when we see something. Second — a pattern nobody in CTE is talking about. Grants that fund CTE instructional coach positions at the district level basically don't exist. Academic teachers get literacy coaches and math coaches funded as line items. CTE teachers get a binder. Minnesota's CTE Teacher Induction Program and Kansas's Mentoring Network are the exceptions. Everywhere else, the industry-to-classroom teacher who needs coaching most gets the least of it. The lesson: Run Your Radar. When the system won't show up, your own attention is the whole game.
