A viewer asked us to address a thorny issue: What are some constructive ways of dealing with sibling estrangement that was orchestrated by a controlling and/or disruptive in-law? In-laws or new partners exert great influence on siblings. When a sibling chooses a spouse or partner, family dynamics are dramatically altered. This episode explores some of the challenges new partners introduce into the family and what to do about it. New members bring a different culture and model of communication into the family, and some resist being vulnerable or discussing problems. Some choose to alienate the sibling from his or her family of origin, and the sibling may not put up much of a fight. Navigating these new dynamics is tricky, and here you’ll find some guidance.
