BOSS Interview with Rose Stuckey Kirk, Verizon's Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer and Marketing Executive -2022

Please welcome Rose Stuckey Kirk, Verizon's Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer and Marketing Executive to BOSS. Rose started her career in journalism. "I was trained in this way of thinking about who, what, where, how, and why. When you think about that with every issue that you take on, you're sort of solving problems in interesting ways. You're thinking about who your customer is, what the issue is, what has to be done, what is your responsibility....I think a lot about how we simplify the problems that we're solving in business...." "I think the way we show up at work has definitely changed...." "When I took this job.... I said to him, I really hope that this isn't a job where you want me to stand in front of those big checks.... I really want to solve some really big problems... I was able to think about where is the business going? Where are the segments of the population that are really important to us? and how do we think strategically about this really huge asset and what can it do to enable that? I started that journey reimagining the dollars and the spend and where the money sat and thinking hard about the big societal problems that we could solve and what our role was as a company...." "We have young people who are now in college who will tell you that that intervention that happened in middle school is why they majored in stem, why they are successful, why they are engineers!" This is a must watch interview from start to finish! BOSS interview with Evan Shapiro, Media Universe Cartographer - May 2023

BOSS fans, this is an exciting episode. I'm thrilled to welcome Evan Shapiro, Media Universe Cartographer, after meeting him at CES through a curated executive dinner hosted by Ben Relles."Given the rate of change in media over the last 30 years.. if you try to plan everything in a truly regimented way you're going to be surprised and disappointed...""Investing time, investing money, and most especially investing risk/skin the game, putting yourself out there, promoting yourself, building a brand for yourself that isn't just self promotion but is actually a brand.. I think it's been proven over the last number of years but especially in this last year with 130,000 layoffs in tech & media and more to come that if you don't create an enterprise around yourself that travels with you wherever you go, then you're going to be completely beholden to the gatekeepers who often aren't making decisions in your best interest.""The reason I made this media map at first was to show how little The Walt Disney Company and Netflix and Comcast are compared to the people they have to work with and are competing directly with at Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet Inc. and Amazon. The Y axis on this is my opinion. My argument would be follow the money... If you want a long sustainable career in the media universe, watch where the resources are being put...""All of media is going to move towards a much more speedy and efficient environment from ad impressions to transactions. That is going to be table stakes in the ad economy which is driving at least half of this ecosystem..."Evan also does a podcast with his daughter called "Cancel Culture" and writes a daily newsletter that you can subscribe to now called "Media War & Peace"Shout out to all of my BOSS guests and keep watching for more.

BOSS interview with Donna Sharp, MD at MediaLink - May 2023

BOSS is super excited to welcome Donna Sharp, Managing Director at MediaLink, who leads Marketing Transformation with the Fortune500 to identify the right people, process, partners, and platforms. I loved meeting her this year at CES."One of the magical things about working in this industry, particularly as someone coming straight out of college, is that your proximity to changing media channels and platforms can make you extremely valuable and strategic even as a new junior member of the team."You'll hear about her career history including a move to China with Mars Wrigley. Me: "How do you get opportunities like that?" Donna: "You ask for them!""I think I did a good job of following the most important advice that I would pass on. That is never leave the karaoke bar early as all the good stuff happens after closing."To hear more of the good stuff, hit play on this BOSS episode now.
