Ep. 129 BIKE MONTH! At the Singlespeed Cruiser 100-mile Ride

I thought I'd send out Bike Month by joining some friends on a 100-mile singlespeed cruiser ride (full disclosure: I couldn't spend the whole day riding, so I joined in for a pile of miles in the morning!). In the spirit of Bike Month, I brought along Mr. Microphone and asked people what cycling has give them, but the episode begins with the swearing in of the Nut Checking Crew - vital to the success of this ride. We close out the show with an impromptu recording of a good cycling friend's daughter, Lauren Igou, who was playing at Captain Roy's, the final trailside bar of the 100-mile ride. I hope you enjoy my conversations with cyclists from around the Midwest on what cycling as brought to their lives (and we ask about their bikes too!). Bikeiowa.com sponsors the event as well as publishes all the events of Bike Month. Bikeiowa.com is your spot for all local and regional rides and events throughout the entire year, as well as important news and information! Ep. 128 James Longhurst; Author of BIKE BATTLES; A History of Sharing the American Road

Several months ago I got an email from a guy in Lacross Wisconsin - James Longhurst. He asked if I’d like to read his book on the history of bicycles sharing the American road. It's called Bike Battles. Recently, he was kind enough to carve out some time during finals week at UW-LaCross, to discuss his book Bike Battles: A History of Sharing The American Road. Thanks to James for sharing his book with us today - I really enjoyed it - and I also really enjoyed diving deeper into it with James - and I would encourage you to as well! It’s available at the University of Washington Press at www.washington.edu/uspress If you have any interest in the history of the bike in America - this is a great book! Ep. 126 Mother's Day Spectacular with Marisa Boaz, Deanne Herr, Dee Mable and hosted by Lisa Carponelli

While we should be celebrating moms 365.25 days per year, we do have one day we set aside to really recognize how awesome moms are. And cycling moms - they're like regular moms, only better! So what better than to, not only invite some awesome cyclists who are also awesome moms, but also invite another awesome mom cyclist and journalist to lead the discussion? What we've got here is gravel pro Marisa Boaz, ultra cyclist Deanne Herr and my own partner in this game of life, Dee Mable all together with the interview being led by a talented cyclist, mom and local news anchor (She's a pretty big deal) Lisa Carponelli. It was an honor to be in the room with the four of them! I really just tried to shut up and listen (but they did pull me into the conversation now and again!). I'd also like to thank Velorosa Women's Cycling Clothing for offering a quiet place for us to meet. Check out the full line of beautiful women's cycling clothing at www.velorosacycling.com If you'd like to register for Gravel Worlds, you can get 10% off your registration fee by using the code: biketalkwithdave at checkout. Ep. 125 Matt Zimmer shares his thoughts on the state of road racing in the U.S.

Matt Zimmer, Project Echelon rider for a good many years and I wanted to get his opinion on the state of road racing in the U.S. We met for a beer on the patio of a lovely local brewery: (Either Or - It's actually a restaurant and nice bar - but it's owned by the people who own a local brewery: Lua - so I call it a brewery... I guess it's Either a restaurant Or a brewery.... the name says it all). Anyway - Matt and I had a great conversation about bikes - we hope you enjoy! Ep. 124 Jason Strohbehn: Gravel Worlds First 2 Last Initiative

In it's 15 years, the Garmin Gravel Worlds has become one of the biggest gravel events on the U.S. calendar. Boasting a heritage of champions that range from Trans-Iowa alumni to World Tour cyclists - and all without huge prize purses - until now. Recently, a $30,000 prize purse was announced for the elite mens and women's races - but along with that, they will also be donating another $30,000 to charities AND have welcomed Hannah Shell into the Gravel Family in an initiative to celebrate the back of the pack, as much as the front in their new F2L (First to Last) program. I invited Jason on, not only to talk about their exciting news, but also the continuing evolution of the sport of gravel cycling. We'd encourage you to register early for Gravel Worlds - and when you do, you can get 10% off your registration fee by using the code: biketalkwithdave at checkout. Ep. 123 Fatbike Design and Prep with Steve McGuire

If you’ve been tuning in through this past winter, you have likely heard of my big scary adventure coming up next winter - what will be my first fat bike winter ultra at the Arrowhead 135 - a 135-mile adventure through the remote wilderness of northern Minnesota in late January - it starts in International Falls and is known for it’s bitter cold temperatures and deep snow - and while it’s not always cold and snowy, as in this past edition (tune in to our conversation with Cate Coward in episode 114!) - but I will say - you’d better be prepared for both! One of the reasons this race is scary for me, is that I’m no fat biker - I don’t yet own one, nor have I really spent any time on one - and though it’s spring and every week is getting warmer and warmer as we head into summer - it’s high time I start thinking about what I’m going to ride next winter! So I dialed up my mentor, Steve McGuire - and who better to talk fat bikes? Steve is not only a veteran of many winter ultras including the Arrowhead 135, Actif Epica, Tuscobia 160 and the Iditarod Trail Invitational - not only all of that - but he also leads the Design, build ride program at the University of Iowa - a cool class for both engineering and art students to who do just that - design, build then ride their own hand crafted steed. So Steve’s not only been riding fat bikes for years and years - but has also been playing with the design - so if you’re interested at all in your own winter fat biking, bike design or... well... Iowa Women’s Basketball - then I hope you enjoy this conversation with Steve McGuire! Ep. 122 Hannah Shell and Starla Teddergreen on Cape Epic

Since starting this podcast more than two years ago, I’ve wanted to talk to a team that had completed the Cape Epic together - Well, a couple months ago I saw that good friend of the podcast Hannah Shell was headed to South Africa with a friend of hers Starla Teddergreen - so I immediately shot her a note asking if the two of them would come on when they got home from the other side of the world and she enthusiastically agreed! Fast forward to April and the three of us found a time to hop on a call together to talk about their experience in the 8-stage mountain bike race. Which is awesome - but even more awesome was getting to know Starla - which leads me to the very buried lead - Starla, who’s raced professionally for nearly two decades - was recently diagnosed with MS - yet overcame the challenges of what can be a debilitating disease - to race in one of the hardest events on earth - she’s quite an amazing role model for women - really all of us - who face difficult challenges and roll on in spite of them - and finding creative ways to overcome the extra challenges they may present - Really - it was a treat to talk Cape Epic with Hannah and Starla - but I also really hope you enjoy getting to know Starla and all that she’s doing to encourage women around the world to get active and stay active! I really appreciate both Hannah and Starla for making the time to come on this week - I hope you enjoyed their stories and friendship! I’d encourage all of you to follow them on socials - as well as Starla’s organization Distance to Empty! I’ll put links in the show notes! And I did look to see when I had Hannah on - it was October 2021, episode 41, when we talked about the state of gravel racing and the first ever UCI Gravel World Championships - plus she and her husband Jake were on last summer to talk about the Gravel Camp they led in Lincoln Nebraska prior to the Garmin Gravel Worlds - that was episode 66 - You should definitely download and enjoy them both! Josh Sprague is as much an addict to endurance sports as the rest of us, and you know as well as anyone when a piece of equipment just isn't quite right. Ep. 120 The 2024 Rattlesnake Gravel Grind Festival w/ Guest Host: Dee Mable!

As a full-time working couple with kids, a house and everything that comes with that, it's a challenge to pick and choose what events to attend throughout the year - but this one comes easy. It's not just a gravel race, it's a weekend long festival of camping, food, music, beers, bike rides and great West Texas hospitality! (and a few snakes) This was our second year (Dee and Dave's) at the Rattlesnake Gravel Grind and of course, Mr. Microphone came with us. After the race we talked with race winners Joe Laverick and Lauren Stephens, second place Chris Mehlman as well as last year's champion Justin McQuerry and first timer Inno Zavyalov. Dee got in the action with Mr. Microphone and talked with second year racer, 13-year-old Bennett Rogers and Ryan Mable who finished his first over-100K gravel race! And we couldn't leave without sharing some of the rich music played throughout the weekend! Be sure and dive into the weekend of fun by heading to www.rattlesnakegravelgrind.bike and follow the ramblings from inside the cycling world by a guy inside the cycling world: Joe Laverick https://www.joelaverick.com/ We would love it if you would consider supporting Bike Talk with Dave by rating, reviewing and sharing on your favorite podcast platform.
