DEI in the Workplace — Corporate Costs and Market Distortions
The Rise of the DEI Industrial Complex
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs have become a ubiquitous feature of large American corporations, universities, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Driven by a combination of genuine intention, legal risk management, activist pressure, and social conformity, organizations have created dedicated DEI departments, hired Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs), implemented mandatory diversity training programs, established demographic representation targets, revised hiring and promotion criteria, and restructured vendor selection and procurement processes.
The DEI industry has become extraordinarily large. By 2023, Chief Diversity Officer positions had proliferated throughout the Fortune 500, with CDO salaries typically ranging from $200,000 to $500,000 per year. Major consulting firms — McKinsey, Deloitte, Boston Consulting Group — developed thriving DEI consulting practices generating billions in revenues. Mandatory 'unconscious bias' and DEI training programs were offered by hundreds of specialized vendors, generating estimated revenues of $8 billion annually in the United States alone.
