Inside the Mind: What Drives a Serial Killer
Are serial killers born evil, or are they shaped by psychology, trauma, and their environment? In this episode of Behind the Surface, we explore the psychology of serial killers and the complex factors that influence violent behavior. Many people assume serial killers are simply monsters, but research shows their actions are often influenced by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. In this episode, we break down how differences in brain function can affect emotions like empathy, fear, and guilt, and how childhood experiences such as abuse or exposure to violence can shape someone’s worldview. We also discuss the role of mental health disorders, including schizophrenia and personality disorders, and how substance use can increase aggression or lower self-control. At the same time, it’s important to remember that most people who experience trauma or mental illness never become violent. Serial killers are rare and complex cases that cannot be explained by a single cause. By looking at the psychology behind these crimes, we can move past simple labels like “evil” and better understand how human behavior develops.
