Clowns

The first rodeo clowns, also known as bullfighters or rodeo protective athletes, appeared in the late 1800s during the early days of rodeo. Their primary job was to protect fallen riders from being trampled by the bull or other livestock. But as rodeo grew in popularity, so did the role of the rodeo clown. They began incorporating comedy and stunts into their performances to entertain the crowd.
