What Religion Renamed - Healing From Religious Trauma
What if what you thought was “conviction” was actually trauma? In this episode of 2weIrDOs, Denise continues the conversation from What Christianity Took From You and goes one layer deeper into what religion renamed. Because religion did not just take things from us. It renamed them. It renamed anxiety as conviction. It renamed boundaries as rebellion. It renamed intuition as witchcraft. It renamed the body as temptation. It renamed questions as confusion. It renamed grief as bitterness. It renamed healing as backsliding. And then had the fried chicken audacity to call our freedom dangerous. In this episode, Denise unpacks how religious language can keep people trapped in shame, fear, panic, and self-abandonment. She gives language to the wounds many of us have carried for years but were never allowed to name. This is for the misfits, mystics, and miracle-workers who were told they were too much, too sensitive, too rebellious, too gifted, too sensual, too questioning, or too far gone. Baby, maybe you were never backsliding. Maybe you were becoming. In this episode, we talk about: Why language matters in religious trauma healing How panic and shame got mislabeled as “conviction” Why boundaries were often called “rebellion” How intuition, dreams, signs, and spiritual sensitivity got demonized The harm of purity culture and body shame Why leaving fear-based religion is not the same as leaving God How to start renaming the wound so healing can begin A simple weekly ritual for reclaiming your truth Key reminder: Some of us could not heal because we were using the vocabulary of the people who harmed us. So today, we’re taking the labels off. They called it conviction. But sometimes it was trauma. They called it rebellion. But sometimes it was self-trust. They called it witchcraft. But sometimes it was intuition. They called it lust. But sometimes it was embodiment. They called it backsliding. But sometimes it was becoming. Reflection Prompt: They called it __________. But it was really __________. Drop your answer in the comments, DM us, or share it with someone who is healing too. They Told You You Were Prophetic, But Punished You for Seeing
What happens when the church celebrates your spiritual gifts until those gifts start telling the truth? In this episode of 2weIrDOs, Denise unpacks what it feels like to be called prophetic as a child, then punished, silenced, or shamed for actually seeing. This conversation is for every misfit, mystic, dreamer, seer, intuitive, and spiritual seeker who had dreams, visions, discernment, or deep sensitivity before religion taught them fear. This episode brings biblical receipts from Joseph’s dreams in Genesis 37 and 41, Daniel’s visions in Daniel 2 and 7, Peter’s trance in Acts 10, John being “in the Spirit” in Revelation 1, Ezekiel’s wheels within wheels in Ezekiel 1, Balaam’s donkey seeing the angel in Numbers 22, and Paul’s teaching on discernment of spirits in 1 Corinthians 12. Denise also breaks down biblical language like navi as prophet, ro’eh as seer, chozeh as visionary, ruach as spirit, breath, and wind, pneuma as spirit, breath, and wind, and diakrisis pneumaton as discernment of spirits. This is not an episode about abandoning God. This is about abandoning fear. Denise explores how religious systems praise prophetic gifts when they are useful, but punish them when they expose manipulation, shame, spiritual abuse, control, or hypocrisy. She also connects this to Black spiritual memory, ancestral wisdom, Hoodoo demonization, Big Mama’s discernment, church mother oil, dreams, prayer, kitchens, Psalms, and the sacred ways Black people have always listened beyond the visible. If you were told you were too sensitive, too spiritual, too curious, too rebellious, too intuitive, too mystical, or too much, this episode is your reminder: You were not evil. You were gifted. You were not rebellious. You were discerning. You were not too much. You were spiritually awake. Episode affirmation: I am not dangerous because I am gifted. I am not evil because I am intuitive. I am allowed to hear God for myself. I am allowed to reclaim what fear tried to bury. I am magic. I am worthy. I belong here. What Christianity Took From You: Reclaiming Wholeness After Religious Shame
🔥 What did Christianity take from you? Not God. Not Jesus. Not the sacred. But the version of Christianity that taught you to distrust yourself, shrink your voice, shame your body, fear your desires, and believe you were not whole unless somebody chose you. In this episode of 2weIrDOs, Denise opens a raw, healing, and empowering conversation about religious shame, purity culture, evangelical conditioning, partnership programming, and the belief that we were born broken. This is not a hate letter to God. This is a love letter to every part of you religion told you to abandon. 🤎 Denise shares personal reflections on being raised evangelical, including the belief that partnership completes you, the fear-based teaching of being “unequally yoked,” and the deep wound of being taught that you were born a dirty sinner. The Quantum Physics of Prayer 🙏🏽: Why Your Faith is Actually a Frequency 🎚️🎛️
What if your prayers were never meant to be begging sessions… but alignment sessions? In this episode of 2weIrDOs, Denise Owens dives deep into The Quantum Physics of Prayer: Why Your Faith is Actually a Frequency — a powerful conversation exploring faith, prayer, spiritual alignment, nervous system regulation, manifestation, biblical truth, and why some prayers seem instantly answered while others feel delayed, blocked, or ignored. This is NOT prosperity gospel. This is NOT fake “high vibration only” spirituality. And this is definitely not religious performance. This is a grounded, spiritually honest conversation about: ✨ Why prayer is more than wishful thinking ✨ How faith functions like alignment, not performance ✨ The connection between belief, emotion, nervous system regulation, and spiritual clarity ✨ Why fear and panic can distort your ability to hear God clearly ✨ Biblical proof that words, belief, and expectation matter ✨ Why Jesus spoke directly to storms, sickness, and reality itself ✨ Black spiritual traditions, church culture, rhythm, prayer, and atmosphere ✨ How to stop praying from desperation and start praying from divine alignment If you’ve ever felt like: • God ignored your prayer • Your faith wasn’t strong enough • You were “doing everything right” but still felt spiritually disconnected • Religion made prayer feel exhausting instead of intimate …this episode is for you. Because maybe your prayers aren’t failing. There Is No Love Without Choice: The Problem with Coercive Christianity
What if the love you were told to give God… was never actually a choice? In this episode of 2weIrDOs, Denise explores one of the deepest tensions inside modern Christianity: the idea that love for God is supposed to be freely chosen… while many believers are taught that rejecting God leads to eternal punishment. Is that truly love? Or is it coercion? Denise unpacks the paradox of “mandatory love” in religious systems and why many people deconstructing their faith are discovering that their beliefs were shaped by pressure, fear, and social survival rather than genuine choice. This conversation moves beyond theology into psychology, culture, and spiritual autonomy, exploring what happens when people remove the force from their faith and ask the most honest question of all: If no one was forcing me… what would I actually believe? Through biblical context, cultural insight, and personal reflection, Denise examines why authentic spirituality can only exist when belief is voluntary. Because love that exists under threat is not love. It’s compliance. And removing the pressure might be the most sacred step a person can take toward real spiritual freedom. In This Episode • The paradox of “choose God or suffer” theology • Why coercion and love cannot exist together • How religious systems use fear to maintain belief • The difference between obedience and authentic spiritual relationship • What happens when people remove guilt, pressure, and fear from their faith • Why deconstruction is often the first step toward honest spirituality • Reclaiming agency in your spiritual journey Key Takeaway Love cannot exist without freedom. If faith only survives under fear, pressure, or threat, then it was never truly chosen. But when belief remains after the fear is removed, it becomes something far more powerful: Authentic faith. Reflection Question If there were no consequences, no judgment, and no pressure from family, church, or community… What would you actually believe? I’m Not Searching Anymore
You don’t have to binge spiritual content to stay aligned. In this episode, Denise talks about stepping out of constant studying and into integration. After years of researching theology, deconstructing religion, decoding symbolism, and chasing revelation, she realized something surprising: She wasn’t disconnected. She was tired. Through Psalm 46:10, Denise unpacks the Hebrew meaning of “be still” and explores: • Spiritual anxiety disguised as hunger • Why Black women feel pressure to over-study faith • The shift from learning to mastery • How integration feels quieter than deconstruction • What spiritual maturity really looks like If you’ve stopped searching and it scared you — this is your confirmation. When Everything Feels Like It’s Falling Apart
When everything feels like it’s falling apart… what if you’re not being punished? In this episode of Escaping Religion, Denise breaks down one of the most quoted and misunderstood verses in Scripture: Psalm 46:10 — “Be still, and know that I am God.” But what does “be still” actually mean? Was it written to silence fear? Or was it written in the middle of chaos? We explore the full context of Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea…” — Psalm 46:1–3 And: “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” — Psalm 46:10 You’ll learn: • The true meaning of the Hebrew word harpu (release your grip) • The deeper meaning of yada (intimate knowing, embodied awareness) • Why chaos does not equal punishment • How religious fear hijacks your nervous system • Practical ways to regulate your body when the world feels unstable This episode dismantles crisis-based theology and replaces it with grounded, biblical truth. Religion taught us that chaos means judgment. Scripture shows us that chaos often precedes revelation. This week’s ritual: The Release Bowl — a simple grounding practice to help you let go of what is not yours to carry. Brought to you by Angel Vehuiah — the angel of awakening and divine direction. Read the Bible Like It’s Juicy - Stop Cherry-Picking and Start Seeing the Story
Most people don’t read the Bible. They skim. They cherry-pick. They turn verses into weapons without context, culture, or Spirit. But what if you read Scripture like a story — full of drama, betrayal, miracles, and divine messiness — the way it was meant to be read? In this episode of 2weIrDOs, Denise Owens takes you deep into the art of biblical interpretation (hermeneutics) with humor, history, and holy receipts. From Acts 1 casting lots to Acts 2 prophecy, from Black cultural storytelling to misused church verses, Denise shows you how reading the Bible right can set you free from bad doctrine. You’ll learn: Why “If the text don’t say it, it don’t say it” is the new rule for Bible study How Black culture and storytelling traditions unlock Scripture’s hidden flow What the Bible actually says about divination and the Holy Spirit The difference between cherry-picking verses and reading with context How to see yourself as part of the story — not outside of it This isn’t Sunday school. It’s bold, prophetic, and unapologetically messy — because Scripture is messy too. Stay until the end for affirmations, a ritual challenge, and a reminder that you ARE the miracle.
