Lil Kim, Salt-n-Peppa, Nicki Minaj and countless other women in Hip-Hop have often been referred to as First Ladies. Even today, when women are mentioned as a demographic within the genre, they’re most frequently called the First Ladies of Hip-Hop. On the surface, the title seems like a high honor to hold. But time and time again, the industry has proven this to be a hollow term, used by labels to prop up their only female artist. It's shifted in it's original use, and it's main purpose today is to reinforce the gender binary in Hip-Hop.
