Illegal Alien Charged in Great Falls Virginia Stabbing Murder
A 42-year-old mother was stabbed to death near a jogging trail in one of Virginia’s wealthiest neighborhoods. The suspect is a 19-year-old Salvadoran illegal alien who was caught and released at the border under the Biden administration—and remained free in Virginia under Governor Abigail Spanberger’s policies. On Monday morning in Great Falls, Fairfax County, officers responded to Difficult Run Park after a jogger found Carmen Lizet Puch, 42, of Reston, unconscious in the parking lot near her 2011 Honda Civic with trauma to her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Fairfax County Police announced Wednesday the arrest of 19-year-old Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos in connection with the homicide. Fox News’ Bill Melugin reported that a federal source confirmed Campos is a Salvadoran illegal alien who was caught and released by the Biden administration in El Paso, Texas, in April 2024. This is not an isolated case. Fairfax County has seen a deadly pattern of violence involving illegal aliens, including the February stabbing death of Stephanie Minter at a bus stop. Local reporting has highlighted that three of the last four killers in the county were illegal aliens. Governor Spanberger’s day-one executive order directed state and local law enforcement not to cooperate with ICE. The result is that criminal illegal aliens remain in Virginia communities instead of being removed. Virginia Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell previously blamed the Trump administration when asked about the Minter murder that occurred in his own district. Separately, a 19-year-old illegal immigrant convicted of groping multiple girls inside Fairfax High School is scheduled for release on September 3, 2026, raising new questions about ICE detainers and school policy. Uriah Kiser breaks down the latest details, the political decisions that enabled this outcome, and what it means for public safety across the Commonwealth—from Great Falls to Bailey’s Crossroads and beyond. Virginia voters deserve clear information about who is being protected and who is being left exposed. If you want straight reporting on Virginia politics and public safety without the spin, you’re in the right place. Breaking: 5 Shot at Virginia State University, 1 Critical
Breaking overnight at Virginia State University: five people shot outside the residence halls in Chesterfield County, one in critical condition. The lockdown has been lifted, but the investigation is just beginning. Virginia State University students and staff woke up to the news of gunfire on campus just after 1:28 a.m. Saturday. Chesterfield County Police, working with VSU campus police, the ATF, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, report five victims suffering gunshot wounds near the dorms. All five were transported to area hospitals. Four sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One remains in critical condition. This is the second shooting on a Virginia college campus this year, following the earlier incident at Old Dominion University. VSU, a public historically Black land-grant university founded in 1882 and home to roughly 5,800 students, sits just across the Appomattox River from Petersburg and about 25 minutes south of Richmond. The campus community has been urged to continue avoiding the residential area and follow all law enforcement directions. No arrests have been announced. Anyone with information is asked to contact Chesterfield County Police at 804-748-1251. Virginia Insider is actively monitoring developments and will update as new details emerge. If you are near campus, have students, friends, or family at VSU, or can share photos or firsthand accounts, email virginiainsider@gmail.com or reach out on X. Spanberger: Too Left for Republicans, Not Left Enough for DSA
Governor Abigail Spanberger is asking a judge to throw out a lawsuit from the Virginia Tech rector she removed — and arguing she alone decides whether her reasons are good enough. At the same time, seven hemp businesses are suing her over a new THC limit that takes effect August 15, Chesapeake just hit pause on data centers, and progressive activists are openly frustrated that she is not far enough left. In this Virginia Insider deep dive, Uriah Kiser walks through the Richmond Times-Dispatch reporting on Spanberger’s motion to dismiss former Virginia Tech Board of Visitors Rector John Rocovich’s lawsuit. She removed him in May citing ethics and conduct violations without specifics. Her attorneys now say state code makes the governor the sole judge of whether those reasons are sufficient. We also cover the Cardinal News story on the hemp lawsuit, the Center Square reporting on Chesapeake’s 9-0 vote to delay data-center applications requiring rezonings or conditional-use permits for up to eight months, Spanberger’s decision to formally intervene in the $67 billion Dominion-NextEra merger review, and The Daily Signal’s account of congressional candidate Tom Perriello’s staff moving him away from DSA imagery during TV interviews in Charlottesville. Socialism Sucks: Tony Sabio’s Message in Virginia’s Deep-Blue 8th District
Tony Sabio just won the Republican primary in Virginia’s 8th District — one of the deepest blue seats in the country — and he’s not soft-pedaling the message. On this Virginia Insider podcast, Uriah Kiser sits down with Sabio to talk about the rise of Democratic Socialists inside the Democratic Party, the “Socialism Sucks” merchandise that is funding his campaign, and why he believes Northern Virginia is the real battleground for the state’s political future. Sabio argues the fight is no longer just Republican versus Democrat. He says the Democratic Party is being pulled left by DSA-aligned candidates who openly talk about abolishing the Senate, prisons, and police. He points to recent primary upsets in other states and to local frustration among legal immigrants who fled socialist systems only to watch similar ideas gain ground here. Half the proceeds from his “Socialism Sucks” shirts and hats go directly to the campaign, and he is deliberately wearing the message in Arlington and Alexandria to show closet conservatives they are not alone. The conversation also covers Governor Abigail Spanberger’s low approval numbers, the upcoming ballot measures on abortion and automatic restoration of felon voting rights, the Iran situation, and the importance of election integrity measures. Sabio makes clear he is building a long-term coalition in Northern Virginia rather than treating the race as a one-cycle long shot. Shannon Taylor Wins Dem Nod: Soft-on-Crime Record vs Rob Wittman in VA-01
Shannon Taylor just secured the Democratic nomination in Virginia’s 1st District and will face longtime Republican Congressman Rob Wittman this November. The Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney is being celebrated by Democrats — but her actual record tells a very different story. In this Virginia Insider breakdown, Uriah Kiser examines the progressive prosecutor policies Taylor has supported and the cases that raise serious questions for voters across the Commonwealth. That includes a plea agreement her office reached with a former Henrico Doctors’ Hospital NICU nurse who abused nine premature infants — one of whom suffered broken limbs — resulting in a deal that limited active prison time to no more than three years. Taylor has also signed onto statements defending “gender-affirming care” for minors and joined progressive prosecutors calling to end cash bail and oppose mandatory minimums. Wittman has represented the district since 2007. Taylor flipped the Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office and has been elevated by Democratic groups. Conservatives in the 1st District — and anyone who cares about public safety and accountability — need to understand exactly who is on the ballot. Virginia Energy Bills Rising 20 Years: Spanberger’s Own Official Admits It
Governor Abigail Spanberger and Democrats campaigned hard on affordability. Now her own chief energy officer is telling Virginians to expect higher utility bills for the next 20 years — driven by aging plants, decarbonization, and the massive power demands of data centers. In this Virginia Insider breakdown, Uriah Kiser examines new reporting from the Daily Progress and statements from Chief Energy Officer Josephus Allmond. Allmond confirmed that large commercial loads — including the hundreds of data centers concentrated in Northern Virginia’s Data Center Alley — are a major reason ratepayers are seeing higher bills. Virginia already hosts the world’s densest cluster of these facilities, with hundreds more planned. Residential customers make up only about a third of electricity use while shouldering infrastructure costs. Republican State Senator Glen Sturtevant is now calling on Governor Spanberger to issue an executive order placing an immediate moratorium on new data center approvals and expansions while a legislative study on the industry’s impacts continues. Sturtevant argues the state should not keep green-lighting projects while it is still studying the strain on the power grid, transmission lines, and water resources. Democrats and Republicans alike have raised concerns about rising costs and local impacts, yet Spanberger’s office has not responded to the latest calls. This is the same administration that promised to bring down the cost of living. Instead, Virginians are looking at two more decades of climbing energy bills while data centers continue to expand under existing tax preferences. Watch as we unpack Allmond’s comments, the push for a pause, the sales-tax exemption debate, and what it all means for families across the Commonwealth. Virginia Assault Weapons Ban ON HOLD Until SCOTUS Rules in 2027
Just a few months ago Democrats in Richmond were celebrating. They passed their assault weapons ban, told Virginians the July 1 deadline was locked in, and acted like the debate was over. Fast forward one month and the tone has completely shifted. Attorney General Jay Jones is now asking courts to keep the ban blocked until at least 2027 while the U.S. Supreme Court decides similar cases from Illinois and Connecticut. In this Virginia Insider breakdown, Uriah Kiser walks through the latest court orders, the statewide injunction that started in Washington County, the scramble by gun shops to restock shelves, and the sudden caution coming from the same lawmakers who spent political capital pushing the ban. We also cover why some retailers are still holding inventory low despite the legal pause, and what this means for law-abiding Virginia gun owners who were told they would become criminals overnight. Virginia’s so-called assault firearms ban targeted semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns capable of holding more than 15 rounds. It was met with immediate lawsuits in multiple counties. The preliminary injunction now covers the entire state. Both sides—including the Attorney General’s office—have agreed to wait for the Supreme Court’s next term. The NRA called the pause a clear win against what they labeled an “insane, radical gun grab.” This is not the end of the fight. It is a major pause that exposes how quickly the political certainty around the ban collapsed once real courts got involved. Stay locked in as more develops on Virginia gun rights, Second Amendment cases, and the General Assembly’s next moves. Trump’s $23B Dulles Airport Overhaul: Huge Win for Virginia
President Trump just announced a massive $22.5–23 billion renovation of Washington Dulles International Airport — and it’s one of the biggest infrastructure wins Virginia has seen in years. The plan phases out the infamous mobile lounges (those slow “people movers” designed by Chrysler in the 1960s) and replaces them with a modern U-shaped passenger train, walking tunnels, expanded concourses, and a new parking garage for 32,000 vehicles. Uriah Kiser breaks down the renderings released by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, the safety issues with the old system (including a November 2025 crash that sent 18 people to the hospital), and why this project matters for the nearly 30 million passengers who use Dulles every year. We also look at the political reaction: Governor Abigail Spanberger celebrated the jobs and investment but declined to credit the president who drove the announcement, while State Senator Scott Surovell raised questions about financing and local input. This is big news for Northern Virginia and the entire Commonwealth — better connections, faster operations, and a long-overdue upgrade to an iconic but aging airport. Spanberger Held This Data Center Water Warning for 6 Months
Virginia’s groundwater is under real pressure east of Richmond, and a long-delayed state report just confirmed it. Even modest data centers could exceed aquifer capacity in most of the region. Uriah Kiser breaks down the new Virginia Department of Environmental Quality study on data centers and the Coastal Plain aquifer system. The report, due out in January but released only recently after more than six months, finds that aquifers east of Interstate 95 lack the capacity for significant new groundwater withdrawals. Modeling showed that a 100-megawatt data center — small by today’s standards — would exceed available groundwater in most locations. Only one site, near Kilmarnock on the Northern Neck, showed enough capacity under the scenarios tested. Withdrawals in one county can lower water levels dozens of miles away. A proposed site in James City County near Williamsburg, for example, could affect levels in Caroline County 68 miles away and Henrico County 77 miles away. The system is connected. The DEQ recommends that lawmakers strengthen the agency’s authority to deny groundwater permits when surface water, reservoirs, or recycled water are reasonably available, or when withdrawals would drop levels too far. The Data Center Coalition pushed back, noting that data centers account for less than 0.5% of statewide water withdrawals and use less than several other industries. Still, the report’s findings raise hard questions about future development east of Richmond and how Virginia balances economic growth with long-term water security. Governor Abigail Spanberger’s office released the report to the Associated Press after months of delays, attributing the holdup to a backlog from the prior administration. Advocacy groups had pressed for its release. What does this mean for Virginia voters, local governments, and the next wave of data center proposals? Watch for the full breakdown. Second Rape at Charlottesville Homeless Camp: What You Need to Know
A second rape has been reported at the Charlottesville homeless encampment along the Rivanna River in the Pantops section of the city. This is the second sexual assault at the Free Bridge camp this month alone. Uriah Kiser breaks down the latest developments, the conditions police themselves have described, and the city’s response that has left many residents asking hard questions about public safety on a trail families once used freely. The encampment sits on a public park and paved trail that local residents helped fund so families could enjoy the river. Instead, it has become a site where needles and human waste are common, according to statements from Charlottesville’s police chief. One citizen journalist who simply walked the trail was threatened with having his head cut off for “invading their space.” Police have released few details on the latest assault and the victim. Meanwhile, city officials have released a new guide and are urging the public not to confront or “agitate” those living in the camp while a coordinated transition is planned for around September 1. This is not an abstract policy debate. It is happening on Virginia public land, on a trail meant for everyone, and the pattern of violence is escalating. Watch as we examine the facts, the official statements, and what this means for safety in Charlottesville and across the Commonwealth.
