In this chapter, the paradox grows sharper because Job doesn’t even realize it’s Satan. He thinks God alone is doing all of this—giving and taking, wounding and withholding. From his vantage point, there is no cosmic courtroom, no adversary making accusations; there is only God’s hand. Earlier he has already said, “The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away,” and now he asks his wife, “Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In his mind, everything that happens passes straight through God’s fingers.
