James Madison, born March 16, 1751, in Virginia, is often called the “Father of the Constitution” and the “Father of the Bill of Rights.” He played a key role in writing the United States Constitution and helped author the Federalist Papers. Madison strongly defended religious liberty, which helped lead to the creation of the Bill of Rights in 1791, including the First Amendment protecting freedom of religion. Later serving as president during the War of 1812, Madison remained committed to the idea that faith, liberty, and good government were essential to the nation.
