Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26 in the United Kingdom, Canada, and many countries connected to Great Britain. The name comes not from sports, but from the tradition of giving “Christmas boxes” filled with money, food, or gifts to the poor and to workers such as servants, tradesmen, and laborers. Originating about 800 years ago in the British Isles, Boxing Day was a time when church collection boxes were opened and alms were distributed to those in need. It also became a day off for workers to receive thanks for their service. Today, Boxing Day continues Christmas celebrations through family gatherings, shopping, recreation, and acts of charity.
