What does it cost to truly follow the King? Today in Deuteronomy, Moses sets out the requirements for the future kings of Israel: they must not multiply horses, wives, or gold, but must instead be students of the Word. We also hear the promise of a "Prophet like Moses" who is to come. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells the Parable of the Great Banquet—a story of an invitation refused—and then turns to the crowd with some of His most challenging words on the cost of discipleship, warning that we must "count the cost" before we build.
