Saul came back from the battle and told Samuel, "I have performed the commandment of the LORD." And then the sheep started bleating. The animals were louder than the claim. What undid Saul was not cruelty or open defiance. It was pride that could not yield, self-deception that called partial obedience complete, and a fear of people that proved louder in the critical moment than his fear of God.
