In this gentle sleep story, a newly graduated young official wakes before dawn to begin his day at the Hanlin Academy inside the Imperial city in Chang'an, where light snow rests along the curved roof tiles and a single lantern hangs above a desk of white hemp paper. He grinds ink slowly on a cold stone, studies the careful handwriting of older officials from previous dynasties in document bundles from the shelves, and copies the final draft in steady regular script as the winter day moves from pale morning through to dusk.
