Across this four-part journey, we move softly from the evening before the festival into a full spring day. It begins on the eve of Qingming, where the Pei household prepares cold offerings in still kitchen courtyards under dim lantern light. By early morning on Qingming day, the family rises with calm purpose, gathering willow twigs and prepared dishes before setting out through light spring drizzle toward the ancestral tombs outside Chang’an.

There, careful hands tend the earth, and offerings are placed in quiet reverence. The presence of past generations lingers gently in the air. As the rites conclude, the day opens into a peaceful spring outing along the southeastern banks beyond Chang’an ...
