In the spring of 1944, the United States Army assembled a unit unlike any other in the history of warfare. Eleven hundred men — painters, illustrators, designers, architects, sound engineers, and radio operators recruited from art schools, advertising agencies, and theater companies — were given inflatable tanks, a collection of sound effects records, and one mission: make the Germans believe they were somewhere they weren't.
