Avoiding bitterness

Bitterness is a deep-seated resentment that develops when hurt, disappointment, injustice, or unmet expectations are allowed to take root in the heart. While feeling wounded is a normal human response, bitterness can grow into a spiritual and emotional burden that affects a person's relationship with God and with others.

The Bible warns believers against bitterness because it can poison the heart and lead to anger, division, and a loss of peace. Hebrews 12:15 encourages Christians to watch carefully so that no "root of bitterness" grows up and causes trouble. Similarly, Ephesians 4:31 instructs believers to put away bitterness, wrath, anger, and malice.

Christianity teaches that the remedy for bitterness is forgiveness. Forgiveness does not mean excusing wrongdoing or pretending that pain doe ...
