Can a person become integrated, regulated, sincere, emotionally healthy, and “whole” — while still being unified around the wrong center?

In this seminar, we ask why Torah psychology cannot stop with healing, authenticity, self-acceptance, or emotional integration. The deeper question is: whole before whom? Unified around what?

We map several Torah models of the unified self: Rambam’s formed soul, Rabbeinu Yonah’s concern with יראת שמים and the source of the middah, Chovos Halevavos’ demand for purity of avodah, and Chassidus’ idea of fallen forces returning to their Divine root.

Along the way, we clarify the difference between outward expression, inward experience, and the source of a middah; why actions form the soul but also come from the soul; and why even religious self-perfection can become a subtle form of self-service. ...
